Abstract

This thesis is a pairing of a chapbook of original poetry, centered around the author's study abroad experience in the summer of 2017, and a critical essay. The essay analyzes the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, Anna de Noailles, and Elizabeth Bishop. The essay also analyzes these poets' influence on the author's original poetry, specifically Elizabeth Bishop and the concept of "tourist poetry". It provides a discussion of the author's process of writing the chapbook, as well as touches on the difficulties of translating poetry while keeping the original meaning intact.
