Iraqi Nation-Building in the Honors College
(Oakland University, 2003-10-01) Kubicek, Paul J.; Brieger, Gottfried
The task of rebuilding Iraq and constructing a democracy there has been compared to past efforts to do the same in post-war Germany and Japan, and, without much exaggeration, it is safe to say that US involvement in Iraq represents the most substantial—and in important ways radical— commitment of US political, military, and economic power in several decades. The preceding constituted the motivation for HC 205, Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict...taught in fall 2003.

The Matilda Wilson College Proposal of December 1956: The First Curricular Source for Oakland University
(Oakland University, 2003-10-01) Tomboulian, Paul; Tomboulian, Alice; Brieger, Gottfried
In November 1956, Matilda Dodge Wilson and Alfred Wilson decided to donate their Meadow Brook Farms estate and $2 million to the state of Michigan for the purpose of founding an educational institution. One month later, an 11-page memo envisioning the nature of the future Michigan State University Oakland (MSUO) emerged from the office of the Michigan State University (MSU) Vice President for Academic Affairs, Thomas Hamilton. The document was the first conceptualization of an academic program for the new institution which became MSUO, although the author called it the Matilda Wilson College.

The Relative Effectiveness of Poverty Reduction Strategies in Nicaragua
(Oakland University, 2003-10-01) Porter, Sean; Brieger, Gottfried
Over the past two hundred years, Nicaragua has experienced colonialism, invasion and widespread destruction, primarily at the hands of the United States Government and client regimes. While Managua’s successive involvement with multilateral lenders helped alleviate certain macro-economic woes, reductions in education, health care and other social expenditures has led to slowly declining living standards for the country’s population.

The Looting of the Baghdad Museum
(Oakland University, 2003-10-01) Wood, Susan E.; Brieger, Gottfried
On April 9, Baghdad fell to American-led coalition forces. Over the following two days, the social order in the city broke down, as typically happens after the overthrow of a government, and uncontrollable mobs rioted in the streets, looting shops, government buildings, and most disastrously, the national library and museum of Baghdad.
