MILFORD—An all-night ‘‘watech”
got under way at 7 p.m. Sunday
at the Percy Stowe home near Mil-
ford when a rare night-blooming
ceréus plant began to put on a phe-
nomenal show that lasted well into}
the wee hours of the morning.
All evening long, friends and in-
terested people came from nearby
communities to witness one of na-|
ture’s most fantastic spectacles — —|
the birth and death of a gorgeous
blossom ina matter of hours.
For seven’ years the plant had
remained an unattractive, non-
descript. bunch of leaves, then
almost suddenly 2 bud began to
take shape out of the side of one
‘of the lateral leaves,
“Even the reddish-brown bud)
was ugly,’ Mrs. Stowe said. “It
looked exactly like the head of a
serpent.”’
It stayed in bud form for more
than two weeks, until the ‘‘queen
of the niglit,”’ as it is known, slow-
ly began to open “right before our
very eyes,"" Mrs. Stowe said.
She added that as the bloom
unfolded, the center stamen
could be seen first. Tiny, deli-
cate tendrils -next appeared as
the big wax-like petals contin-
ued te open,
Because of its-rare tevcael
nothing seemed to compare with’
ithe pungent, exotic fragrance of
the bloom that filled their home

At midnight, the huge bloom had
reached its fullest growth. It meas-

NEW YORK ( —-On a recent
television thriller, the victim met:
his end by cooking gas. The turn
of events came as a great surprise
to the author of the show who had
figured out murder by means of a
live electric wire.
g * * *
As it happened, the rewrite of
that portion of plot was no reflec-
tion on the writer's ingenuity. It
was just that the sponsor of the
show happens to be the manufac-
turer of electric household de-
