Lloyd Thdxton is host of “Showcase *68, NBC’s summer series which emanates from major Glenn Miller Tune Got Thaxton G axton reached his turning point while he was high school. “I was never interested in music,” he said. “I was interested in sports. I was a math major and wanted to be i an engineer. I was in seventh grade. One evening, while I was lying in bed, Glenn Miller came on and played Tcr-fldia.’ That got to me. I spent a week looking for the rec-ord, that’s how it moved me, It swung me in this direction. I began by taking up the drums.” Thaxton won national prominence as a show business with “The Lloyd Ibaxton Show,” a dance-and-r which ran five days a week for five years and was syndicated in over 90 cities. Thaxton followed this with his own celebrity game network show, "Everybody’s Talking.” Thaxton’s talent for spotting talent is spotlighted in "Showcase ’68,” a cross-country summer series giving regional entertainers their first nationwide exposure in colorcasts he hosts on NBC Tuesdays, 8-8:30 p.m. "I’ve always been a great admirer of talent, in any & area,” said Thaxton. "I consider a person talented who can get in front of an audience and turn everyone on. There’s so much undiscovered talent around.’,’ With his new show Thaxton travels to various cities in search of talent. He also features nationally known entertainers on his program. He has been credited in the dis- &hk m wmmd mm laiem plus a guest Star. Djana Ross and the Supremes, and the Righteous Brothers. He's Behind ’ M America Charles Kuralt, CBS News correspondent, leaves the camper bus he drove across America for 11 months, filming the rural America that 'never makes headlines. A half-hour film chronicle of 'his odyssey will be presented at 10:30 p.m, Tuesday over Channel 2. Lucille Ball's enthusiasm leads to complications when she is invited to watch John Wayne make a movie, on “Lucille Ball” Monday at 8:30 p.m. over Channel 2. For 15 years now the most unusual executive producer in television has been sitting quietly behind the scenes to spearhead the rise of the Miss America Pageant in popularity. His name is Albert A. Marks Jr. He is a highly successful stockbroker whose only experience in television has been with the Miss America Pageant since it was first viewed nationally in 1954. When the annual pageant is colorcast over NBC on Saturday, lO pim. to 12 midnight, the aggregate viewing total will have mounted to astronomical figures. "Something in the order of nearly a billion people?* says Marks who is an expert in figures of all sorts. Marks, the unperturbed amateur who handles but one show a year, has guided the Miss America Pageant deftly to a tremendous rating each year. PHI BETA KAPPA A bespectacled six-footer who was a Phi Beta Kappa and varsity football and tennis player at Williams College, Marks obeserves modestly, "If you can administer in one field, you can administer in any field.” Last year when an incipient technicians’ strike, and other complications, threatened the calmness of various officials and the possible future of the Miss America Pageant, Marks was the coolest man in Atlantic City’s mammoth , Convention Hall. His entire training has been to resolve dilemmas quickly. One of his best schools in this respect was his service with U.S. Air Force contract administration as a lieutenant colonel during World War II. Then there is the little matter of his business as a senior partner of Newburger and Company, with whom he has been associated for 33 years. $5 MILLION BEFORE LUNCH A visitor called him recently at noon. In the space of half an hour before lunch, Marks quietly bought $5 million worth of stock for clients. He warned one prospective customer against a gold share buy. On his way out, he was buttonholed by a man who planned to marry the following month and wanted to know the best time to sell 10 shares of qil stock. Coordinating with a group of Atlantic City businessmen who volunteer their services to the Miss America Pageant, Marks, as chairman of the executive committee, oversees a paid staff of approximately 10 people. This staff acts as catalyst for 3,500 local and State pageants, attracting some 70,000 entrants, including 50 state winners to appear in the grand finale at Atlantic City. Marks lives in a Georgian Colonial home in suburban Margate with his wife and three children. In his spare time, Mr. Marks is treasurer and a member of the executive committee of the Atlantic City Convention Bureau and director of the Guaranty Bank and Trust Corp. of Atlantic City. One could add organisation after organization. FINGER ON THE PAGEANT But he manages to keep his fikger on the Miss America Pageant operation. ’ “What’s the secret?” "We have people who specialize,” says A1 Marks, "my job is to provide the .frame in which they find themselves.” 12 TUESDAY MORNING 5:45 (2) On the Farm Scene 5:58 (2) C — News 6:00 (2) U. of M.
