Summerfield, postmaster general, attended a cau- cus of the Michigan delegation yes- terday noon. “IT am- devoted to President Eisenhower because I believe fully in his policies and his philosophy. I have utmost confidence in his t experience in national affairs and his ability in organizing people for the jobs to be done. After three and a half years my esteem and condence | in him has continued to: increase.” Speaking of defense matters, Wilson said differences within the depart- ment had been exaggerated and add- ed “We are we are a peace loving people. Through our strength we hope to preserve peace, even an uneasy peace, long enough to permit men of good will to establish a lasting peace. That is our purpose.” Touching upon the importance of electing the right men,.to state offices, he said: “I once told Mr. Cobo I hoped to call him governor >. gome day. I think if you get out and work you can elect him gover- nor of Michigan this fall. It is very important that you have a good working mane? in- your legisla- ture.” . He specified four impor- tant .steps: 1° Clarify the problems; 2. Fix re- sponsibility; 3. Simplify organization; 4. Avoid too. much concentration of stupidity. His endorsement of Vice Presi- dent Nixon came in reply to a question from the floor. He said: . “T have a great admiration for the vice president. I have watched him closely for the past three and a half years and I know nothing bad about him whatever. I am for him.” - Asked if he planned to take Much part_in_the coming campaign, Wilson- said: “I don’t think so. I believe the defense of the natiori should always be above and beyond partisan politics. Whether we are dealing with either party we want to sell defense on its own merits.” * * *. On the matter of better pay and other inducements for men in service he said progress is being made and the rate of re-enlistment is going up. “I have always believed in treating people right and in presenting the proper incentive to good service.” Sen. Charles E. Potter, spoke briefly and revealed that Vice President Nixon has invited him to make one of the seconding speeches for Nixon’s nomi- nation. “I greatly admire our vice presi- dent and I am honored to make such a seconding speech,” Potter said. “Aside from our . personal friendship, I believe Dick Nixon is ‘the best qualified man for the job.” Summerfield stressed the impor- tance of the coming election, saying it will take four more years to complete the overall program of the adminis- tration. “And in four more years America will be in position to enter the _ greatest period of prosperity we have ever known,” he said.
