There are two sides—or eight. Well, that’s what makes a republic The Board of Supervisors has Studied the problem the longest and in the greatest detail. It favors the site on Telegraph. These reasons have been listed: an easier place for the county in general to reach; much better parking; making the current lo- cation down town available for . some other activities; financial saving to the tax payers. ~x~ * * : Pontiac attorneys prefer the conven- jent down town location. Attorneys around the county probably prefer the more convenient location away from the center of the city. Pontiac attorneys have not united on a single plan. One wants a 100 per cent county building where the courthouse is now. Another wants an office and county building combined. Others want it on the old jail site with the court- house location sold. Some suggest the Masonic Temple. Across from the jail on Wayne Street has been favored by others. And so it goes. | * x * The Supervisors agree. They've picked a location. They’re pre- pared to move and yet until the comparatively recent days, the opposition has been firing in several directions. * * * We hope Mr. Grewn C. GILLespre can unite the local group. It will simplify the problem. He asks what location .will “best serve the public interest.” If Mr. GILLESPIE means the Pontiac attorneys, the answer is “a down town location.” If he means the 400,000 residents of Oakland County, we suggest the site the supervisors have selected. Transportation is mentioned, but we never saw a steady demand for trans- portation that went unfiiled long. Automobiles probably convey the bulk of the courthouse people to the current building just as they could to Telegraph road. * * * The Supervisors have given the matter the most study. They’re the experts. The Press trails along with them. Extending the Seaway Senator Fercuson has turned his attention to getting maximum possible benefits for Michigan from the St. Lawrence waterway. To that end he said in Lansing that early next year he would push for appropriations to finance widening and deepening of channels in the Detroit ‘and St. Clair rivers. His objective is a Congressional appropriation sufficient to finance work that will permit vessels with a loaded draft of 25.5 feet to reach Great Lakes ports. ~x~ * * The importance of these improvements stems from the fact that the seaway work on which Canada and the U. 8. now have embarked, goes no farther than Lake Erie. It is emphasized in figures quoted at a Sault Ste. Marie meeting of the Upper Peninsula Development Bureau. Joun BEUKEMA of Muskégon, presi- dent of the Great Lakes Harbors Association, predicted a vast increase -in foreign trade on the lakes after the seaway opens in 1959. as x *« * , Last year that trade totaled 652, | 4 mee ers . It is something to be threshed out at the trial when witnesses for both sides are called, As the U. S. attorney said in his affidavit, Judge . Youngdahl practically passed on the question of Lattimore’s innocence, Rover said: “It a prospective jurer in a criminal trial stated that he had a ‘serious doubt’ regarding the guilt or innecence of a defendant and that evidence would be re- quired to overcome such doubt, there can be no question that any judge would disquality the jeror from #itting in judgment at the trial of the defendant.” The Supreme Court; moreover, has held that a judge's ruling in the lower courts as well as what he throws in by way of ‘‘dicta” or expressions of personal opin- jon—are pertinent in considering whether he should be disqualified, Maybe Judge Youngdahl was merely giving vent to a natural indignation in his tart statement about the U. S. attorney's affidavit, Maybe the judge will yet disqualify himself voluntarily, Other judges, after formally answering for the record any charges of bias, have then removed themselves from the case and suggested the appoint- ment of another judge. THE PONTIAG PRESS MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1954 \ . PONTIAC, MICHIGAN, * aS Urges Yes Vote Howard K. Kelley Approves _- New Courthouse Proposal Howard K. Keliey, a Royal Oak attorney, today lashed | out at “loose statements by merchants, businessmen and public officials around the City of Pontiac” about thg proposed new county building. While “there appears to be no ar ent that there is need for a new building,” Kelley said, “There does seem to be a trend of thought that would have voters believe that these merchants, professional men and politicians have some sort of ‘property right’ in the present location of the county building.” Kelley continued: “Undoubtedly its present location is beneficial to them from a business standpoint. But it is cer- tainly not beneficial to the majority of the people either in Pontiac or Oakland County. “The new location (on Telegraph road) is beneficial to the people of Pontiac in that it will continue the serv- ice in their area and return to the tax rolls a corner with | the highest tax potential in the city, from which they | now derive no revenue.” Swinging over to a recently published statement by Mayor William W. Donaldson of Pontiac, Kelley said: “Five questions were raised by the mayor of Pontiae regarding the new site, each of which was examined previously by a competent committee before it made its recommendations. “In fact, raising the questions now amounts to no more than an attempt to create stumbling blocks and mislead voters. “Supervisors from Pontiac have long known the com- mittee’s epor and recommendations without raising these questions. “Sincere po hy to the change of location should suggest to the public where county services could be housed in Pontiac if the present building were to be torn down and rebuilt. What would be the cost to the public for temporary quarters? “No attempt has been made to make construc- tive suggestions, merely attempts to discredit work already done. “Even with municipal parking lots proposed there would not be adequate parking for service. “I have been under the imp on that the county building is for the convenience of all of the people of the county, not for a few who might benefit by its loca- tion. “A savings of $1.5 million Should be some incen- tive for providing adequate service to all the county. “I would sincerely urge all the voters of the county and Politicians Keep Big AY SEWAGE PLANT EXPANSION — Improvements completed this year are shown in this aerial photo of Pontiac's municipal sewage treatment plant at Featherstone Ave. ani East Boulevard.
