But it’s essentially what will be happening soon to thousands of American air trav- elers as commercial jet airliners begin service in ‘the U.S. this experience shows that the chances of even the latest piston engines stopping in mid-air are five times greater than the chances for a jet engine flaming ‘out in flight. Offer Dividends to College-Bound By MARGARET BROWN That young soda jerk who's been whipping up ice cream delights at the corner.drug store this summer or the the boyish clerk who fitted your last.pair of shoes very likely may have been among the ranks of young people who are working this summer to earn money for college. Folks generally tend to regard a young person’s work- ing part time as a mark of maturity and responsibility. The ambitious student earns the respect of his peers, parents. and the community, as well as gaining that inimitable and vital sense of usefulness or productivity in life. VALUABLE EXPERIENCE Part time summer employment offers a young person an invaluable learning experience, even if his temporary work has no relationship at all to the field in which he majors at school. A job in which he deals with the public . can provide excellent training in acquiring self confidence and asserting one’s self, and also presents the young em- ploye a realistic preview of our.society as it really is. And it’s amazing how a job considered unrelated to a certain field actually may correlate beautifully with a chosen line of study. Fhe student who spends a summer meeting the public in a hospital or department store, for example, can learn a lot about human nature that might prove to be a big help in some phases of his classes—such as interpretating some of Shakespeare's personality studies in @ literature course, or writing an impromptu theme from one’s own observations. The experiences these young people are tucking away enlarge their thinking and reasoning capacities and may prove to be effective stepping-stones toward becoming a well-rounded individual who, as the adage has it, “... knows everything about something and something about every- thing.” ‘ _ wk © * Pictured on today’s women’s page are only a few of the many local young folks who will be heading for colleges and universities “throughout Michigan come fall.
