Will gas rationing in the United States be one result of the political crisis which has arisen over Egypt's seizure of the Suez Canal? That in- teresting question has been raised by the magazine U. 8S. News & World Report. x * * ‘It arises out of the proposal by U. S. Secretary of State Foster Duties that the western nations may find it necessary to bypass the canal if Egypt either closes it to the ships of certain nations or finds it ‘impossible to operate the canal as efficiently as it was operated in the past. : The number of ships handled did drop alarmingly at first, after many British and French pilots quit their jobs, but new pilots have been trained and shipping once more is passing through the canal in substantial volume. However, the magazine's report, followifig an interview with a Stan- dard Oil official, indicates that there is no present likelihood of gas ration- “ing. Even the absolute closing of the Suez Canal would not cripple either ‘the United States or Europe, al- ‘though it would bring serious reper- —_= — -cussions to business and industry. However, the loss of both the oil moved through Suez and the Middle East oil that is moved through pipe- lines would probably result in gas rationing here. -. x wk * The United States now gets about 300,000 barrels of oi] daily from the Middle East. That is where the really big known reserve deposits lie. Any time they are cut off there is bound to be a shortage that is serious. That is one reason why the Suez Canal _issue is so important. - xk * * » Fortunately, at the present time -there is no indication that either Suez or the Middle East pipelines are _oing to be closed to us. But in the tase of any new world war, that is a “contingency which the United States ‘and Europe must face. That is why -France and Britain have favored an _ even firmer position than our own government toward Egypt. - We have a fairly substantial sup- ply available near by in Venezuela, _in addition fo those in our own ‘country. Canada also has fairly large reserves. But Europe is directly dependent on the Middle East. © ____ So, while no danger of gas rationing appears.on the imme- diate horizon, oil has become so ‘important a factor in modern life that it provides the biggest single. element. in the back- ground of the Suez crisis. Oil is of vital importance to us in peacetime. In war it is an absolute must. School Enrollment Rise : of 43. Per Cent Looms Rapid growth in population brings - Many problems in its wake. Such a report requires time to digest. 7. *&..% Dr. Hufziger estimates that our schools face an increase in en- roliment of some eight thousand _ pupils between now and 1965. Today’s enrollment is 18,500. This increase amounts to about forty-three per cent. It will require a steadily progressing building pro- gram to keep up with the increasing number of children. | x * * Dr. Hurzicer estimates that, over the period specified, this — building will cost some twenty million dollars, in addition to one million for removing exist- ing buildings. No schools are to be torn down or abandoned. x * * Some two years ago the voters approved. an increase in the school tax to make possible this building program and a substantial start al- ready has been made. In the past year contracts totaling $2,530,317 have been authorized and a $1,796,- 000 program for the current school year has been approved. Dr. Hufziger estimates that the program can be carried on until 1960 by levying the maxi- ‘mum. tax authorized by the voters, but after that time some borrewing may be necessary. The Board of Education has been wise to attempt to look ahead so that it may plan its building program over a period of years to meet the need for more room as it arises. Need- less‘ to say, the report's forecasts are estimates. However, they do serve as a basis for planning, even though some changes in the plans undoubt- edly will be necessary from time to time. The People’s Business: Big Names Used Dem and GOP Leaders Stream Into Michigan = ' By ROGER LANE LANSING—There are few things like ‘some big name ‘attractions on nominee, Thomas E. The Democrats got an assist from Sen, Hubert Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and Gov. Frank Clement of Tennessee. AROUSES INTEREST : : There is a cumulative effect to this activity. It gets the people talking politics. They know these big name outsiders, at least by impression, and many admire or despise them. : x * * From that point, it’s an easy thing for the political consciousness to shift to the state candidates, and the issues that have local impact. Anothe? sign that the campaign is warming up appeared in the increasing use of strong words. For example, Democratic Gov. Williams, seeking’ re-election, was called by Re- publicans—among other things— a “vote seeking pretender,” “two-faced” and a i economic royalist.” Detroit Mayor Cobo, the. Republican governor candidate, was told he stood by while a “colossal theft” was perpetrated “under his nose” in 1936.
