      GREATEST WOMAN
“World's Greatest Woman Athlete,” Mildred (Babe Didrikson)
Zaharias was a star in many sports. At the left she was known
most prominently for her greatness in golf. She even boxed in New-
York in 1934 and she was always known for keeping physically fit.
Here she is shown (third photo) working out at White Sulphur __'THE PONTIAC PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1956

ATHLETE — AlWays referred to as the KV
AAU championships in 1929, 1930 and ’31 and twice was named to
the AAU all-American team. Her one-game high with the Cyclones
was an amazing 106 points. oe :
Babe Didrikson was a one-girl team at the National AAU track
and field championships in Chicago in 1932. This Texas dynamo won
\first place in the 100-yard dash, the 80-meter hurdles, the 220-yard
dash, the javelin, the discus, the broad jump and the high jump. In
addition, she tied for first place in the 50-yard. dash and placed second
fn the shot put.
But it was-in the Olympics that the Babe earned herself the right
to be called the female counterpart of the great Jim Thorpe.
jodiet ‘and games.” Mildred stole the spotlight at the games four years later in e ew 3
Los Angeles: ~~ * pes She set a new world record in the javelin with a heave of 143 feet,
four inches. She also established a new record in the 80-meter hurdles,
with a winning effort of 11.7 seconds. Both marks have since been bet-
over the high jump, good for five feet, five inches, was disallowed by
the officials as “illegal.”
Not long after her sparkling Olympic triumphs, Babe's ams-
teur status was revoked by the AAU because her picture appeared
in an automobile advertisement.
It was the late Grantiand Rice whe introduced Babe to golf,
or rather, golf to Babe, Regaining her amateur status in 1943, she

| Im what amounted to a great tribute to Babe's ability, the United
\State’s Golf Association amended its entry rules to permit Babe te
‘compete in the 1948 men’s National Open at Los Angeles. é
In a supposed man's world, the Babe hit her tee shots better than
many of the male golf stars. Once on a radio show, the singer
Hildegarde complained to Babe: ’
“I can’t understand why 1 don't hit a golf ball as far as you |
do. It seems to me I swing the club the tame way.” :
Babe’s answer was 2 classic. “Hildegarde,” she sald, “it’s ©
not enough just to swing at the ball. You've got to loosen your
girdle and really let the ball have it!”
“ From the time she began playing golf in 1935 to her first
with cancer in 1953, Babe Didrikson won 82 tournaments and a hus
band. She met husband George Zaharias on a golf course,
Los Angeles open in 1938 was a ‘man’s event but Babe wasn't
by the rules, George, a professional wrestler known as “the crying Greek from
Cripple Creek,” was playing an opening-day threesome with Babe
ahd a Presbyterian minister.
“Qne minate we were saying hello, and the next minute
photographers were crowding around and calling for him te put
wrestling holds on me,” Babe used to explain it. “George put
his arm around me, pretending to apply neck holds and stuff.
And I didn’t mind it at all.” r
- Dancing and romancing followed and George and Mildred were
married in St. Louis on Dec. 23, 1939. Baseball's Leo Durocher and
Joe Medwick were witnesses. Their marriage to the end, was one
of mutual love, devotion and admiration.
fan accomplished billiard player, bowler and swimmer as well,
the Babe did some boxing, once practiced with the SMU football
team, pitched for the Cardinals in an exhibition game against the
Brooklyn Dodgers, and hit three home runs in a women's amateur
baseball game. :
It was just ten days after she had won the Babe Zaharias open
in Beaumont in the spring of 1953, that the Babe learned she was
stricken with cancer. .
“Lord knows it wasn't easy to face,” she recalled. “George
says I didn’t bat an eye when the word came. But I did, Inside,
I never in my life played at anything, including living, that I didn’t
expect to win. Now, all of a sudden, maybe I wasn’t going to win
the big one.” Foal
In April of that year, Mrs. Zaharias underwent an operation at
the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beaumont for cancer of the sacrum, af
the base of the spine.
She won round one and four months later thrilled countless fans
by shooting a 307 for third place in the world championship at Tamt
O'Shanter. J * e
Apparently recovered from her illness, the Babe was terrific in
1954, winning five golf events, including the U. S. women’s open.
|She started 1955 strongly, winning at Tampa and Spartanburg, S. C.,
|before the disease struck again.
solid for the future. ‘
“The way Bucky has brought the club back during
the final two months of the season is tremendous. I
wish him the best for the future.”
