Peddling Law Stiffened
Pontiac City Commission has enacted
and given immediate effect to an ordi-
nance which tightens regulation of food
peddlers on city streets.
The need for a stronger ordinance

—first was pointed out by Commissioner
Carry. He reported that because of
doubt as to the original law’s validity,
several violation cases had to be thrown
out of municipal court.
* * *
As finally approved, the new
ordinance bans peddling from
any vehicle on Pontiac streets of
ice cream products, meats, fish
or poultry. One aim of the Com-

:

    mission ts to protect children
against traffic accidents which
could result when they rush into
the street to buy ice cream.
* *x* -*
Another is to safeguard the general
public against unsanitary food. It is
the Commissioners’ hope that the ordi-
nance will reduce the health hazard
caused by litter resulting from street
sale of these foods. —
The ordinance also should meet a
long felt need by remedying conditions
amounting to unfair competition
against taxpaying community-buildin
merchants.
Crisis in Brazil
Until more details are known, it is
impossible to estimate the seriousness
of unrest in Brazil in the wake of Presi-
dent Varaas’ suicide,
That anti-American riots in
the capital city of Rio de Janeiro
and in the interior were stirred
up by Comimunists, appears like-
ly. There are reports, however,
_that the Reds merely are capi-
talizing on the crisis and are
. working both sides of the street.
x & &:,
The crisis which so suddenly plum-
meted Vice President Care into the
presidency was political with economic
overtones. On August 5 an air force
major was shot to death when mistaken
for an anti-Vargas editor. Revelation
that three members of President Var-
Gas’ bodyguard were involved brought
immediate demands for his resignation.
* * *
Troubles in the world’s fourth largest
Nation were intensified by the fall in”
the price of coffee. They were climaxed
bythe demand of air force and army
officers that Varcas take a 90 day leave
of absence. Four hours after he had
bowed to that ultimatum’, Varcas was
dead of a self-inflicted wound.
Here is another example of
what can happen in the absence
of strict civilian control of the
military, as we in the United
States maintain it. In many South
American countries, governments
stand or fall at the will of the
army.
* * *
The murder of the air force major at
least suggests that the man once known
as Dictator VarcAs was attempting gov-
ernment by assassination. ’
At this stage it is comforting to know
that the accession of Vice President
Care to the presidency was in accord-
ance with the constitution. Also reas-
suring is his plan to continue his
predecessor's policy of friendship with
the United States.

  But the most convincing mark
that He gave it is its unity of faith,
worship and obedience under the
authority of the lawful and histori-
cal successor. of Peter, the first
Bishop-of Rome and the “rock”
upon which Christ built His
Church, Just as Peter was the first
Pope and the first Vicar of Christ,
so also is Pius XII the 262nd Pope
and the Vicar of Christ today. Many will enter the church at any
hour of the day co visit Jesus Christ
present on the altar, mindful of
His invitation: “Come to Me. all
you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.”
But, you ask, is all this neces-
sary? Catholics believe it is,
They believe that Christ not only
called upon us to honor and serve
God .,. but prescribed the ways in
which'we should do so. He did not
say how often we must go to church
.-. or how many prayers we were
to recite. But He did establish a
Church with the power and author-
ity to carry on His work .. and He
promiised that His Church would Catholic Church possesses today,
we'll be happy to send you without
cost or obligation an interesting
and enlightening Write

“States Boost Tax |
Collections in 1954 WASHINGTON ®—The 4 state
governments increased their tax
collections nearly 5 per cent in the
1964 fiscal year.
The Census Bureau announced
‘| this yesterday, saying the states
collected $11,072,000,000 or 49 per
cent more than the $10,552.000,000
*) tax take of the year before.
Federal tax collections © in ~the
194 fiscal year totaled 64% bil-
lion dollars—about six times more
than those of the states.
State fiscal years vary somewhat
but in general they run from July
1 to June 30, the.same as the fed-
eral government, .
Hope Dim for Settlement
of Square D Strike Soon
DETROIT (UP)—There appears
to be little hope of ending a 74-day
strike against the Square D Co.'s
Detroit plant within ‘‘the near fu-
ture,”’ federal and state mediators
said today.
_ Negotiations were recessed in-
definitely Friday after mediators
discussed issues between the com-
pany and Loca] 957, United, Elec-
trical Workers (Ind.) in a 6% hour session \
