Miss ANNA Jarvis of Philadelphia in 1907, as a day honoring her mother, the observance of Mothers Day has become nationwide, and even extends to foreign countries. And next Sun- day marks its golden jubilee. _ Miss Jarvis got behind her move- ment in a big way. She enlisted the help of the newspapers, and sent out thousands of letters to influential people. - ee ee The response was so favorable that on Sunday, May 9, 1907, it was decreed that the second Mon- day in May of each year should be set aside as an occasion to honor all mothers. ae ee Her homie city of Philadelphia was first to give it an official status. Other large cities and some states _ 800n after followed suit. On May 10, 1913; both the Senate and House of Representatives at Washington passed resolutions in the same accord. The wording stated that it was to be an occasion “dedicated to the honor of the best mother in the world, your mother.” 7. Now the day is generally observed in all churches, regard: - ss m, and ' appropriate exercises. - “Without any official “status, through the years the symbol of the day has become the wearing of a ~ white carnation if your ‘mother is” deceased, and a colored one if she is living. In many states a display of ‘the flag is the rule, both in homes and at business places. e+ =& tom, Mothers Day has become somewhat commercialized in _re- cent years. Perhaps that’s a good thing, for many of us are at a « Joss as to what to give our mother, whem we may {AK “Si orey- igocidl optaaita, and eae ant fae We ont at the yoo, ¢ Kerk ~The whole: spirit of the day in its "proper intention, is best summed up in an extract from one of the letters oan, Smeal tac “We should we L : \ ’ , But. the Sates of 25 years i that the farmers donot want | them and the Executive Branch, as & practical marie cannot enforce them.” + The Secretary says that price supports are still too high and too inflexible and that the cost to the ‘taxpayers has been $11.7 billion in| that -time. He believes these have been of little or no help to the prob- lem of low income farmers in whose name farm programs are frequently defended. - e. Re Ree Mr. Benson argues that price supports have helped the polit- ically powerful and generally well-to-do producers of a small number of favored crops. They even have been encouraged to produce for sale not to the market but to the Government. - In a letter to Sen. Atten J. Eusaxogn, Louisiana Demacrat, chair- man of the Agriculture Committee, Mr. Benson points out that present farm. programs. and policies aren't working out and cost too much. The, Democratic price support and acre- age allotment programs, he says, do not cut farm production enough and ao ‘not raise farm prices. ere eee The GOP. surplus disposal and soil bank plans, he admits, are the most expensive fagm programs ‘ever written and they haven't done what they were supposed to do. Mr. Benson feels that-the soil bank plan should be allowed to expire in 1959 and that price sup- ports should sad made more flex- ible. The picesbaty thinks the correc- tion of this situation should be dealt with as an economic problem and not as a political issue. It can be hoped that Secretary Brnson’s “frank, non-partisan and informed views will be given serious considera- tion by Congress. SEVENTEEN 6 REASONS | WHY YOU SHOULD USE HIGH QUALITY fs Pe ae Ready-Mixed Céncrete is of high quality, accurately poepectbeaiall 2 at a central plant with modern batching equipment. Each batch is designed for your specific job and is thoroughly mixed to in sure concrete of uniform: quality, durability and high strength. ‘CONVENIENCE 7 Ready-Mixed Concrete results in maximum convenience on the job. You don’t have the problem of estimating the quantities of cement and aggregates required. You save the time, trouble and hard labor of handling and mixing materials. It does away with stock piles of aggregates and stores of cement that take up space on the job site. And, too, there’s no cleaning up of excess materials upon completion of the job. A phone call will bring’ the concrete to your job, and in many cases, it may be placed directly into yout forms. SPEED | Ready-Mixed Concrete avoids delays in placing operations because it is delivered when and where it is needed. It is ready to deposit in your forms immediately upon delivery, often without re- handling, thus speeding up operations, The exact quantity of concrete needed is delivered directly to Re job ep cers Sm lose no time in waiting to start or finish a job. ECONOMY | Ready-Mixed Concrete is economical. And big-volume. efficiency methods. mean low costs . . » even small jobs get the benefit of large-volume production. There’s no waste — for concrete is delivered in the exact amount desired — no wasteful left-over materials, no costly reordering. Neither is it necessary to rent or purchase a mixer. You know what the concrete for your job will . cost because the price it quoted before the concrete is delivered. DURABILITY Ready-Mixed Concrete is durable. It is scientifically designed and properly mixed to insure the quality desired for specific jobs. Too much water in the mix causes a loss in strength and dura- bility. Skilled concrete technicians at ready-mix plants determine the amount of water to be added te the portland cement and a tes. The amount of water used in mixing Ready-Mixed Concrete is always right for good durability. DEPENDABILITY “‘Nesly- Mined Concrete is dependable because there is full strength and uniformity in every load. With modern precision batching equipment, each truckload coming to your job is alike and exactly as you have specified.
