S inn Is Evident to All ‘By JOE HAAS Pontiac Press Staff Writer ST. IGNACE —. At the dedication of “Mighty Mac” itis difficult to find any feature of the bridge or its approaches in which the Pontiae area did not have an active part. The brains and brawn of that part of our state is evident on every hand. It starts in history and is here today. It was when our Murray D. VanWagoner‘ “was Michigan State Highway commissioner that the idea of a bridge\really took root. it ‘was when he: was governor that it sprouted-and_ -began te look like a possibility. The scoffers quit. His knowledge and foresight assured him a place on the Bridge Authority when it was formed, and. he has held that position until what looked like his dream became a hundred- million-dollar fact. Murray's smile is even wider than usual today. The Catsman Compahy; which has extensive gravel hold- ings in the Pontiac area furnished much of the concrete for the bridge’s foundation. They know how to mix it for the ages. : : ’ * * 2 + 2 x * *. It is manned by. an expert canoe racer. 2 . an The Hadleys had this canoe built by Indians who searched the forests for a birch tree large enough to furnish the bark for an authentic canoe. It was used by them in securing views on Northern Michigan streams for their illustrated lecture on ‘‘The Seng of Hiawatha,” ‘which they have given in over 200 cifies in United States and Canada, It will be returned to them at Holly later. It is expected that this first crop will produce over 17,000 heads of lettuce. While the season has not been very fav- orable for raising lettuce, it is expected that the first crop will be ready for harvest within a few days. Then another crop of lettuce will be raised this summer on the same ground. This is low muck ground that had been broken up by Williams and on which he raised potatoes for a number of years. It is supplied by an irrigation system, get- ting the water from a nearby lake, and hence is not dependent on natural rain- fall. Mr. Hayashi came here from Imlay City a few months ago, wh¢re muck farming has been extended to several thousand acres. He feels that the Pontiac area, with its numerous lakes, many of which are surrounded by undeveloped muck land, offers exceptional opportunities for this new branch of agriculture in raising let- tuce, celery, onions, cabbage and other crops that thrive on that kind of soil.
