FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1956 Regular Airline Service Within Pontiac’s Grasp Every resident in the whole Pon- tiac area should be interested in the brightening prospect that regular commercial airline service may soon come to Pontiac. ~*~ «© *® Improvement of Pontiac's Munici- pal Airport through construction of a new’4.000-foot. paved and lighted runway is riow being completed. This wili make the air- port safe for DC-3 twin engined planes. Already represen- tatives of one com- pany, North Central - Airlines, have ex- HOSKINS _ pressed an interest in adding Pontiac to their schedules. _ & * * This is good news indeed, Many Pontiac residents use airplanes, and so do many more residents of the area roundabout the city. The long drive to Willow Run, however, requires so much time that unless the trip is a fairly long one a traveler is apt to use se much time getting to and from the airport that he could go as quickly by train or car. In addition to the passenger serv- ice that may be attracted, greatly improved air freight service will be possible also, since the new runway will make it safe for regular. cargo carriers to use the airport. This will benefit business and industry * throughout the Pontiac area. Pontiac’s City Commission has dis- played real vision in making possible this improvement in the Municipal Airport. Years ago their predecessors on the Commission built an airport that was one of the finest in the country for that day. Then came other commissioners who had no interest in air travel, They were unable to see the benefits - that would accrue to the city that kept its airport up to date and in the | forefront im facilities, safety and size. ’ x * * As a result, Pontiac's Airport sank from-near the top to close to the bot- tom in its ranking. So the record of the present City Commission in its rebuilding program is an outstand- ing one. All of the Commissioners have backed the expansion of the airport. So has City Manager Will- ~*~ *« * % All through the years Homer C. Cam- paigns to eliminate them have been waged in Denver, Chicago, Balti- more, New Orleans and many other cities in this country and abroad.’ © Denver tried a chemical which gives the birds a hot foot. The Chicago Transit Authotity hired a Pigeon Eliminating Company to clean up its elevated stations. The company placed sharp toothed metal stripping along the beams on which the pigeons were roosting, but they did not go away. Apparently they liked the rumble of the elevated trains. we me we In Montreal a gluey substance has been tried as a pigeon fepellant. New Orleans and Cincinnati have also used a chemical compound. New York is trying to halt the feeding of the pigeons by reminding the pub- lic that this practice is a violation of the litter ordinance. That city also is shocking electrically thé pigeons that gather on the stonework of its city hall. So it goes across the nation. When the United States Mu- nicipal News started out to sur- vey this field it found pigeons and starlings are not the only birds that American cities are trying to eliminate. In some areas woodpeckers and even squirrels have been found to be pests. . x * * This information will not help Pontiac to get rid of its starlings. But it may lessen the anguish of local citizens to know that their feelings are being shared in many cities, and that, so far, complete cures seem to be hard to discover. * The Man About Town Make Your Entry Final Call for Contestants; Don’t Let $300 Get Away will Easy Street: Where $300 help put you: see below. How About Another Summit Meeting?” “. David Lawrence Says: Neither Party Can Boast Unity WASHINGTON—The campaign has gone far enough to establish that both parties are in serious trouble internally. It means dis- unity and confusion in Congress no matter which presidential can- didate is elected. It points to a major crisis in American govern- ment beginning in January. - * * Judging by the heavy mail I have received the past three weeks from all parts of the country, the disaffection in the. Democratic party. in the South is. far mony ox tensive than has hitherto n conceded, and there is a deeper cleavage than is generally known inside the Republican party in the North. The bitterness of regular Re- publicans against se-called “lib- eral” Republicans, on the ground they have been extolling New Dealism and their own party to the delight of the radi- cal Democrats, is also far more extensive than I had believed. “Many Republicans have been alienated by “liberals” Republican ranks and now say there's no difference between the parties. Hence they don't in- tend to vote, * ‘ As for personalities, the stéady decline ‘of Adlai Stevenson in his speeches from a position of prin- ciple and apparent conviction on public policies to one of trickiness and mud-slinging is perhaps the most significant thing turning up in criticisms. from They say he is indeed a “new” Stevenson—a growing disappoint- ment to many who voted for hm in 1952. MARGIN WILL DROP On the other side, while there is a decline in President Eisenhower's political popularity, especially in certain depressed areas here and there where economic conditions are not good, there is no material change in his personal popularity. People still ‘like Ike even though his majorities in several states he carried in 19527 will go down precipitately this time and soine of them may be wiped out altogether. What's happening inside ‘the Democratic party in the South and in the border states will never be measured by. polls or even finally by the electoral votes that virtually all the South- ern states will cast for Stevenson, The truth is that peblic senti- ment in the South growing out of the “civil rights” issue is far more antagonistic to Stevenson ‘than appears on the surface. The. regular Democratic: leaders in. the South, however, have per- suaded themselves they cannot desert the party this time for a variety of practical reasons. They see their only’ chance to- frustrate “civil, rights legislation by re- taining possession of important committee chairmanships in Con- gress, which will help them in their filibusters inside and outside of committees, + * * But while such dissension will not affect the Stevenson electoral vote—which -will be nearly solid for him in the trouble in- South—the side the Republican party in the North is far more seriods and menacing for Ike, - Two big surprises are in sight. inside Democrats, - get from the so-called ‘‘Negre vote.” This vote has been heav- fly Democratic ever since the 1932 depression. “it was strongly Democratic in 1952, not becatse of what Truman did on “civil rights’’ but for economic rea- sons. The Republicans will be astonished this autumn when they find how little they have gained in the northern Negro districts despite the pelitical gestures made by the President in the integration policy which be im- pulsively ordered in District of Columbia schools and in public statements enthusiastically en- dorsing the Supreme Court decision on segregation. The other upset will be noted 1. when the regular Republican vote is counted. The most injurious factor to the Republicans is the lack of enthusiasm which the regu- lars have for the ticket. They are pleased with the renomination of Nixon, but they keep saying the White House leadership is the same as under the Democrats and there isn't much to choose between the two candidates Some of these Republicans will vote for Ike reluctantly, but what's important is that too many of them will not work as enthusiastically or as energetically as they did im 1952 when Taft led them in the final weeks of the campaign. (Copyright 1956, New York Movele Tribune ma) Dr. William Brady Says: Daily Calcium Requirement There are about 24% pounds of calcium (lime) in the body, 99 per cent of it being in the bones and teeth. The rest of it, say two Spoon- fuls, is distributed among the nerves, muscles, glands and blood. 4 The bones, as physiologists, nu- tritionists, and physicians of recent vintage are aware, serve as the storehouse for calcium. So do the teeth, although some of the older and icially trained dentists take a monolithic view of the teeth —they believe, and even blurt out, that once a permanent tooth has formed, its chemical composition can never vary. Touching on this point, Prof.. Henry C, Sherman, author of the famous Chemistry. of Food and Nutrition (MacMillan Company) stated: ‘ pregnancy and lactation is ‘doubt. less largely due to a withdrawal of calcium from these stractures to meet the nutritive requirement of the fetus or the mtrsiing.” In the pamphlet Calcium. and Pregnancy I tell how to protect the expectant mother’s or nursing mother’s bones and teeth against calcium depletion and at the same time provide what it takes to build strong bones and good teeth in the y.
