Freperick J. Poouz, vice president of _ the F. J. Poole Co., building suppliers, was named the “Outstanding Young Man of 1954.” The title of “Outstand- q ing Boss” went to Davip R. Ewatr, City ; Parks and Recreation director. : Metvin Exter, home builder and parking lot operator, won “Key Man” award. This signifies the chamber’s belief that the re- a cipient has been its outstanding - 4 member in the past year. The chamber’s custom of bestowing _ . these annual awards is a happy one, * ° We think it is a splendid way of calling _ the community's attention to the work | . of its rising young men. U.S. Pay Raises Overdue is in a mood to vote favorable action on President Eisennower’s request for a ive per cent wage boost for Federal] em- ; | : The opposite seems to be the case, however, regarding his in- sistence that postal pay raises be accompanied by increased postal rates. ' * * , an The raise for 1,500,000 civil service employes would add $400,000,000 a year - to the Federal payrolls. This would include $55,000,000 for a contributory er wants the pay crease in postal rates, sufficient to put the department on a pay- \a., jafyou-ge basis, a * * * Besides advocating an increase to four p cents for letters, he proposed immediate + raises in second and third class rates. 7 Later he is expected to ask for a one cent raise, to seven cents, for air mail. f It is on the issue of mail rates that i the President's proposal will meet strong H opposition, Democrats, almost to a man, H oppose any increase, although Congres- ) ' sional sentiment in general favors the five per cent pay boost. “i ok OUP _ This newspaper believes the ss : wage increase for civil service and i postal employes is overdue. We L also think the President is on solid ground in demanding postal increases to offset the wage raise. ~ It doesn’t make sense to continue operating this department in the red. Its deficit for 1955 already is estimated at $400,000,000. If it takes four cent letter mail and higher second and third ~ class rates to put this department on a business basis, the issue must be faced squarely. - Just a Matter of Defense _ Rumblings in Washington indicate that the last word may not have been said regarding the choice of a site west of Cadillac for a new jet air base. Reports are that several north- ern Michigan Representatives and some chambers of commerce |... {ae dissatisfied with the location. _... ‘There even has been talk of a Congressional inquiry into the NACE matter, — s _ All signs so far indicate that Congress half pounds. - Verbal fort, Kalkaska, Pellston, Grayling and as far south as Batt): Creek. This is wholly understandable, A base such as is proposed for Cad- ilace could mean considerable eco- nomic help for a small community. , x * * But despite this, it seems to us the sole determining factor should be our national defense needs and that Air Force Secretary TaLsotr should make that clear to all concerned. Ht Traffic Deaths Down Michigan motorists have made a good start in the New Year. . For the second weekend of 1955 there has been a meaasurable increase in highway safety and a sharp decrease in fatalities. During the past weekend there were only seven traffic deaths in the State, or just three more than the previous weekend. Both totals represent a highly commendable improvement over the Christmas weekend when 18 lives were lost. Perhaps the heavy Yuletide toll made drivers more cautious. Favorable weather and driving conditions also may have been factors in the better rec- ord. Whatever the case, drivers de- serve credit for this fine showing and for proving that the terrible slaughter on our roads can be re- duced. ———SEEEe ee PERCENTAGEWISE, more rich people commit suicide than poor ones. It seems that each member must pay one cent for each year of his age on each birthday. The Nye account was balanced at once. The last time I talked to the late Charies E.
