MEMBER OF AUDIT BUREAU OF CIRCULATIONS
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1955
_ Lincoln Club Speakers +
Praise Ike’s Program _ Oakland County Republican Club's
65th annual dinner meeting was a
notable affair. :
The presence of 450 members provid-
ed Interior Secretary Douctas McKay
and Congressman Grorcs A. DonpEro
with an ideal opportunity to pay tribute
to the Great Emancipator.
* = *
The membership reacted enthusiasti-
cally to praise of the Eisennower Ad-
ministration voiced by both speakers.
Equally enthusiastic was the applause
when they pointed to the Lincolnesque
qualities of President Eissnnowen.
“Lincoln’s selfless dedication to
the fundamental welfare of all
Americans,” said Secretary Mc-
Kay, “we find. reflected in the
, words and actions of our President
today. His pregram is for all
America, based on enduring prin-
ciples and not on political expedi-
ency.
  * * *
Continuing, Secretary McKay remind-
ed his audience that Linco.n brought to
the country the promise of strong, pro-
, gressive government which drew adher-
ents from both the older parties.
“In just such fashion,” he said, “has
President Exsennower provided the an-
swer.to the demand of the American
people today for responsible, incorrupti-
bie leadership.”
* * x
There are plenty of solid rea-
sons for such praise. The people
in 1952 voted overwhelmingly to
put Dwight D. Eisenhower in the
White House. They did so be-
cause they believed he'd give
- them a program inspired by zeal
for the common good and dedi-
cated to the welfare of every
American family.
Because he has done that, we believe
they will do the same thing again a lit-
tle less than two years hence.

Indefensible Delay
The Senate's Judiciary Committee is
paying a high price in loss of prestige
for its indefensible delay on the nomi-
nation of JoHN MARSHALL HARLAN to be
a U. S. Supreme Court Justice.
* * *
The nomination went to the
Senate early in November. But
action on it was left to the new
Congress at the instance of Mis-
sissippi’s Democratic Senator
EASTLAND. The new Congress
has been in session more than a
month but the Judiciary Commit-
tee has set February 23 as the
earliest date for dealing with the
nomination.
* * *
A significant fact in this matter is
that the Supreme Court has delayed
action on decrees to implement its de-
segregation decision till it has a full
complement of justices. Sen. EASTLAND,
of course, isn't the only member of the
upper House who would like to see the
desegregation decrees delayed inter-
minably.
* Sen. Lancer, ranking Republican
member of the Committee, opposes
Judge Hartan for another and most
frivolous reason. He is not a North
Dakotan or native of one of the other
six States which Lancer says never have
been represented in a high Government

into @ very cor-
dial demonstration of Itale-Turkish
agreement on the value of NATO. As a
result it is believed the NATO alliance
will be strengthened along its southern
Tank.
* x *-
_ Another result of the visit was
agreement. on collaboration for
the defense of the Mediterranean
with special emphasis on the
eastern end of that great sea.
Both the Rome and Ankara gov-
ernments consider themselves
“the two most important for-
tresses of Western defense” in
that area.
. x * *
Also of interest is the fact that the
discussion embraced expansion of the
Turkish-Greek-Yugodlayv alliance to in-
clude Italy. One obstacle to such ex-
pansion is Greece’s current unhappiness
over the Cyprus issue. There is also
Egypt's opposition to Turkey's agree-
ment on a defense pact with Iraq.
Because Western defense solidarity is
so important, it is to be hoped all of the
nations concerned will co-operate in the
common effort.

The Man About Town
Widely Known City
Pontiac Has Distinction Not
Enjoyed by Others
TV set: A modern contrivance
whose best part often is its shut off.
“When you tell them you're from Pontiac,
they always take notice,” says
City Manager Walter K. (Bill) Wiliman,
- im speaking of attending conventions or
other gatherings in faraway cities. He finds
that Pontiac's fame spreads over & much
wider area than that of
other cities of comparable
om ‘ gize or even much larger.
wr This he says is largely due
to what we have accom-
plished or now are doing
im our several ways. This
ineludes the manufacture
of the Pontiac car and oth-
er things allied to the auto
age. This is the only car
that bears the name of the
Waasen city where it is made. And
the great Indian ehief also accumulated a
fame that is passed on to us.
In spite of her very efficient official con-
tact over a long period of years with more
people than any other Oakland County
woman,
Prebate Register Florence Doty
is the most publicity shy person I ever met
When I told her I was going to put an item
in this column about her good work, she
threatened to shoot me So here: it is, and
if I don’t dodge the bullet. please omit flow-
ers.
Holly claims to have been the first Michi-
gan town to pass an ordinance prohibiting
spitting on the sidewalks. It was in 1905 and
John Barnes
painted the signs for posting throughout the
village.
It is not generally known that the late
Henry Ford
has a brother living not far from Pontiac.
He is
William Ford,
aged 83. who owns a farm on which he lives
just over the Oakland County line in Living-
ston County. Although Henry's will made
no mention of him, William vehemently de-
nies any ill feeling between them. They
never mixed very much. William and his
sister, |
_ Mrs. Margaret Reddiman,
aged 87. of Dearborn, are the survivors of
the five Ford children who grew to adult-
hood
When their cars ran inte a Detroit
underpass bridge abutment, 16 per-
sons were either killed er injured in
twe years. Afier a “keep right” sign
was posted on the abutment it has
net been struck by a car in seven
menths.

Advantages of Country |
Don't Lure Rudy Vallee By EARL WILSON
NEW YORK — Rudy Vallee was talking about the advan-
tages of the country over the city.
“I had a caretaker who was always pointing them out,” said
Rudy.) “His name was Charlie Johnson. He was from Lovell, Me.
“*What’s New York or Los Angeles got that we haven't?’ he'd
say. ‘Libraries? Ho! We've got 3 traveling libraries that
bring the books right to us!’”
Rudy's speech almest convinced me that I should go back
te Reckford, Ohio, and work on the weekly paper.
* * * *
We were at a little French restaurant. Rudy was just back
from 17 weeks in Europe. He played himself in “Gentlemen
Marry Brunettes,” looking as he looked in 1926 when he was
fresh from the country.
“Charlie Johnson,” Rudy went on, “would |
say “Yes, you do have museums and beautiful
paintings.’
“But what do they show? Beautiful fields,
lakes and sunsets. We don’t need the paintings
—we have the beautiful fields, lakes and sun-
sets. The painters come here to copy what we
see every day!’” .
~ *k* kk ®
I was about ready to buy my tickets for back
WILSON home.
Rudy, having finished his costly dinner, lit a costly cigar.
the opera in the city.
“What de THEY do?’ he'd say. ‘They copy the songs of
the birds. We hear them every hour. Without buying a
ticket.
“‘I remember the other night,’ he'd say, ‘when I heard the
beautiful song of the thrush—and all was still.’
“Somebody from the city said, ‘Yeah, too still.’
* * * *
“But,” continued Rudy, “Charlie was right. I got advantages
in health, and in proper living, in a small town, that have been |
invaluable to me.”
“Bo all right, it's a deal,” I said to
Rudy. “I'll go back to the Middle West.
You'll go back North.” ways a sun-worshipper, but I never
knew it till I moved te California.
I love it there. When I go back up
“I say ‘Because I was born here, do I
have to like it?’ I don’t believe the av-
erage boy who leaves, wants to go back.
I don't.”
I'll see you around Broadway.

by Ohio Solons Whole House Gangs Up
on Young Lawmaker
During Maiden Speech
COLUMBUS, Ohio (INS)—Young
Bogg Taft, son of the late “Mr.
Republican,”" made his debut this
week in the Ohio House of Rep-
resentatives where his father got
his start in politics and observers
agreed they were watching a
“comer.”
The whole House ganged up on
him playfully as he made his
maiden speech, but Bob Jr. soon
let it be known they were dealing
with a Taft.
His first bili was not the kind
te proveke public enthusiasm.
It would allow judges in divorce
cases to issue orders about cus-
tedy of the child while the case
was pending. As he \phrased it,
it would ‘“‘provide for custody
and support pendente lite.”
The last two words sent the use milk again. THE PONTIAC PRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1], 1955
| legislators off into a carefully-
planned spree of indignation. One
| old veteran of legislative baitles
rose and asked, “‘What do those
two funny words mean anyhow’”
“In English,” Taft shot back, |
“I believe that ‘pendente lite’
means while litigation is pending.”
I “Oh,” countered his opponent, |
“I knew that all the time.” The |
Heuse rocked with laughter. The
handsome S0-year-old grandson
ef President Taft stood his
ground good-naturedly and fin- |
ished his speech. |
When he was through the |
speaker called for vote on the

maiden effort shattered. But be-,

members now voted?” |
Suddenly all the red lights
switched to green. Bob Taft had)
survived his first test.

  Reds Coin ‘Automaniac’
for U.S. House Leader |
TOKYO W—The official Chinese
Red newspaper coined a word
today—atomaniacs—and bestowed
the label on Rep. Martin, the Re-
publican leader in the House.
“American atomaniacs are again
brandishing their weapons while
taking part in Chiang Kai-shek’s
military operations in China's oft-
shore islands,”’ said a Peiping
broadcast, quoting from People’s
Daily.
“Martin's fantastic thinking has
reached the point where he be-
lieves the use of atomic weapons,
can bring the Chinese people to)
their knees within 30 days,” the
newspaper said.
