MEMBER OF AUDIT BUREAU OP CIRCULATIONS MONDAY, NOVEMBER ?, 1953 Teacher Quits Under Fire The case of Georce MILLER, Clarkston school teacher, who resigned under fire deserves the thoughtful attention of al! school officials and every. parent of a school child. . : Until State Police revealed otherwise, everything about this 31 year old teacher of social sub- jects appeared commendable. During his three years on the staff he has become popular with fellow teachers as well as stu- dents and parents and was presi- , dent of the Teachers’ Club. a a ae There was no evidence that his teach- ing was slanted toward Communism. Instead, school officials considered his work outstanding. In fact, the first question ever raised against him fol- lowed his reaction to an: investigation by State Police. — Then followed MILLeR’s own admis- sion, according to School Superintend- ent L. F. Greene, later denied by the teacher, that he once had been a card- carrying Communist. : * * * Though Miller now insists he _ As long as Mr. Mriizr maintains such an attitude, officials and parents alike are entitled to deny his right to teach in our schools. Our Royal Visitors It was wholly fitting that King Pau. and Queen Freperra of Greece should be given a warm official and public welcome to Washington. The King and Queen, here for a two week goodwill tour of the United States, are distinguished representatives of a people who have contributed much to civilization. - From ancient times until today the role played by Greece in the advancement of the fine arts and human freedom makes one of the brightest chapters in the history of mankind. * * * We in America realized this anew six years ago when our Government de- cided to help the Greek people defend their independence against external and internal Communist attack. Were it not for the success of that struggle the area of political freedom would be much smaller and the map of the free world much different than they are today. 3 * * * Ever since the responsibilities of the throne fell on them, the King and Queen have done much to help restore peace and oppor- tunity in Greece. Much of their success in that work rests on their genuinely sympathetic in- terest in the welfare of their countrymen. In honoring-them, we in this country are paying deserved tribute to a people who are among our staunchest allies. Damning Indictments In their nauseating details the two reports of unspeakably fiendish Com- ‘munist brutality in Korea are as damn- ing indictments of a governmental sys- tem as were ever written. | Second of these is the Army’s report documented with photo- graphs and affidavits on the mass torture and murder of 29,- 815 persons, including 6,113 - ~ zs & Rarlier Dr. Cuantes W. Mayo sub- mitted at U. N. a ghastly story of how Ruisian directed torture had wrung. ‘ oe ee of Metamora; captured American fliers. The facts in the Army report y with those in: the first atrocities report made public in November, 1951. Only the fact that 76 of the 107 airnien sur- vived this calculated torture en- abled Dr. Mayo to submit such complete refutation of the Reds’ germ warfare lie. Of the remain- _der, 14 are known to be dead and 17 unaccounted for. * * * What makes the Mayo report an even stronger condemnation of this scientifi- cally directed savagery is that it was continued even after the truce was signed. No one could possibly condemn the 36 who broke under this ter- rible torture and signed “confes- sions.” Nor can anyone escape at thrill of admiration and wonder that so many held out against their captors. = * * x - - These reports are more than ever galling because of the frustrating fact that short of war, there appears to be no means by which those guilty of these monstrous crimes can be punished. The United Nations no doubt will be asked and of course must adopt a reso- lution condemning this wantonly stupid barbarism. But until world conditions change, there can’t be any punishment to fit the crime. —_——— a hazardous and expensive undertaking. -“Reapina maketh a full man. . .”— but eating maketh him fuller quicker. pn __t Or courss, those who sit on the shore and wait for their ships to come in don’t leave footprints on the sands of time. It makes - bigger slabs, letting us roll out longer, heavier coils of sheet steel, : catting loss of time and material for the car makers. Good news, too, is the fact that by December of this year, a month ahead of schedule, we'll have an annual capacity of four million ingot tons. That tonnage is about 25% of the car makers’ total needs for steel, and about 40% of their needs in the kinds of steel we make. So Great Lakes is now mote than ever a dependable first source of steel for automobiles. It was because motorcar makers need a steel company that’s both available and fléxible that Great Lakes Steel was set up in the first place; many years ago: Availability meant; fot one thing; easy reach ; : : right in the heart of the industry: Flexibility meaht no dependence on other suppliers: We start with ore, and take it through our own blast furnaces, bessemers, open hearths, slabbing mills, hot and cold rolling mills and merchant mills, right down to the finished forms. That lets Great Lakes do a real job. You can count on great things from Great Lakes. For we're aim- ing to serve our customers well, in many fields ; ; ; and especially in the mighty automotive industry.
