It also is gratifying that the whole world knows that the roadblocks to settlement of — European problems were one hundred per cent Russian. Popular Promotion The Press feels sure that President -. E1sennowen’s decision to make CHARLES A. Lovpperom a brigadier general will . meet with widespread public approval. - Before the nomination could be sent to the Senate it was neces--~ sary to'clear up a regrettable in- cident of early World War II edays. The hero of the first solo flight to Europe had resigned ~_his reserve commission as colonel in the Air Force. _ * * His action followed criticism by the late President Roosrve.t of LinpaercH’s campaign against U. It should not be forgotten that as soon as the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Lindbergh volun- teered for duty. He also taught pilots of our P-38 fighters how to conserve fuel. * * * We believe with retired Gen. Convicted Reds Sentenced In sentencing the six convicted key members of the Communist party in Michigan, Federal Judge Picarp spoke — for all loyal Americans. What he said was no overstatement. Credit is due Judge Picarp for the meticulous care with which order in the courtroom was maintained and the rights of the accused were safeguarded throughout the four months long trial. In his charge to the jury he emphasized that the defendants were not on trial because they are admitted Communists, but because they conspired to destroy ‘the Government. * * * The five defendants facing prison terms and the sixth, who may be de- ported to his native Scotland, are mov- ing to appeal. That in no sense alters the fact that their conviction was a noteworthy victory against the forces of world Communism. It cannot serve, however, as an excuse to relax the common ef- fort te combat subversion in Michigan or anywhere else. The Man About Town Our Courthouse Oakland County Has Had 4 in Its 133 Year History . Daffynition Diplomatic: When you know how to let the other fellow have your way. Oakland County has had four courthouses since it was organized in 1820. The first was built in 1824, and was a one-story squared-log. building on the lot in the rear of the present courthouse. It was succeeded in 1848 by a low one-story frame building on the site of the present courthouse. In 1857 this gave way to a two-story brick building, used until early in this century. The cornerstone of the. present courthouse was laid on Aug. 30, 1904, and it was dedicated on Nov. 1, 1905.
