OCTOBER 6, 1958 Report Fugitive Seen in Seattle He May Be Man Sought for Questioning Here in Slaying ‘of Hoodlum Reports that one of two men wanted in the Commerce Town- ship slaying of Texas hoodlum George Kean might have attempt- ed to sell a 1955 automobile in Seattle over the weekend, were being investigated by WasHington authorities. Capt. Thomas H. Grant, of the Michigan State Police, said a copy of the first-degree murder warrant issued against the two men and Demitrios Tsermengas had been immediately sent to Seattle police upon learning of the attempted sale. Grant said it is believed that Lowell E. McComb was attempt- ing to sell the car which was registered in another name, pos- sibly an alias ef McComb’s. What connection the auto might have, if any, with the murder last December of Kean in a lakeside home was not yet known, Capt. Grant said. “We've received nothing back from Seattle since we dispatched the warrant as a hold on McComb,” Grant said. Waterford, B Still at large are McComb and Thomas D. Smith. Tsermengas, 39, ef Ecorse, is being held in the Oakland County Jail pending an examination on first-degree mur- der Friday, Tsermengas described to police here last week the “accidental” shooting of Kean when he and the other two men were attempt- ing to disarm him after Kean threatened, ‘‘] ought to kill all of you right now.” This story was pretty much sub- stantiated by Donald E, Chandler, 38. in whose Long Lake home at 1872 Point Dr. the shooting took place, The four men stopped there en route to pull a robbery in Sault Ste. Marie, police said. Smith is reportedly free on a $10,000 bond for an armed robbery of a loan office in Texas and has not been located, Grant said Texas authorities informed him. Extra- dition of Smith back here to stand trial for the murder is remote be- cause of the other charge, Grant said. Earlier reports from Sheriff Har- jon Wright of Tarrant (Fort Worth) County that McComb would be Birmingham and Waterford Township fire departments emerged the victors at what of- ficials called the most successful firemen’s field day ever held in Pontiac. The six-member Birmingham team won two trophies in compe- tition before a capacity crowd of 600 at Northside Field Saturday. By midmorning word of the cease fire had not seeped down to the troops in the trenches and the civilians doing their chores with an ear cocked toward the sky for the awful sound of incoming shells. High-ranking Nationalist and |The Day in Birmingham Randall Court Gives Way to Lakeside Continuation BIRMINGHAM — Randall Court apparently is destined to remain Randall Court. In his prepared report for the City Commission meeting tonight, City Manager L. R, Gare states there is strong opposition to the proposal asking the street's name be changed to Lakeside. The change was suggested when special assessment districts were being created, and it was pointed out that Randall Court is a short section in the middle of Lakeside drive. Dropping Ran- dall Court would make Lakeside a contingeus street, Particularly objecting to the change is Richard L. Campbell of 839 Randall Court. He is being supported by a neighbor, Fred- erick F. Holt of 879 Randall Court. Post office and utility compaxzies have offered no objection, Gare said. He added, however, that resi- dents would have to change house numbers as well as street names if the renaming took place, Gare said he feR Campbell’s objections were reasonable, and suggested an additional street sign at the Bald- win street intersection, indicating Lakeside drive as well as Randall Court, Commissioners also will consider the off-street parking problem of the Birmingham House Motel, which wil! be built at the corner of Hunter boulevard and Maple avenue, A denial of use of the Hunter right - of - way for parking makes it impossible for the motel to provide required space.
