That is. if you don’t put a name tape inside your eyeglass case Even if your case is mono grammed, it is difficult for the finder to track you down merely from your initials. Besides, he may have neither the time nor the inclination to make the effort. So for safety'’s and vision's sake, see to it proper identification — meaning full name and address and possibly even telephone number — are included on the tape. This is jthe advice of eyesight sfecialists who point out hundreds of pairs of glasses are lost each week be- cause of this oversight. Eyewear should ‘be carried in the safest possible place — hand- bags for ladies and inside coat pockets for men, Some women place them in shal low dress or suit pockets. Men often keep eyewear in coat breast pocket or shirt breast pocket. In either case, bending down spills out the eyewear. Some men are inclined to put eyeglasses in back trousers’ pockets. But on 13 May the foreman of the jani- torial staff dashed off a memoran- dum, “Subject: Unlocked Win- dows.” He said the window inci- dent of 14 April couldn't have been his men, because they didn't wash those windows until 15 April. This reporter talked for two hours with the elusive Greek-Ar- gentine entrepreneur to get the story of a life which has taken him from a Turkish prison, where at the age of 16 he spent two months in daily fear of being hanged for politica] reasons, to a point where he is one of the world’s richest men controlling, with his associates, 90 tankers, freighters and whaling ships. He turned out to be far more affable and outspoken than ever would have been expected of a man whose reluctance to be in- terviewed by newspapermen is almost a legend, Mr. Onassis makes his business headquarters on the ninth floor of an imposing, glassy skycraper at 655 Madion Avenue when he hap- pens to be in New York. He has been here a bit longer than usual this time because he is involved in a deep legal struggle with the Federal government. The interview took place in Mr Onassis’s executive suite in the modern offices of Central Ameri- can Steamship Agency, Inc., one of the 30-odd shipping and busi ness corporations which he owns or controls around the globe. He also maintains private resi- dences in New York, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Paris and Antibes, on the French Riviera among other places. This is one reason why Mr. Onassis is so hard to find for an interview: he's always on the move. He was just getting set to fly to Europe again to attend the launching of his newest — and biggest — ship, the super - tanker, “King Ibn Saud 1." The 47,000-ton vessel was launched June 5 at the Howaldtswerke Shipyard of Hamburg, Germany. A slightly smatier sister ship, Greek Boy came down the same slipways just under a year ago. The crisp matter - of - factness and at times jocular forthright ness of Mr. Onassis’s manners and statements do not gibe well with the aura of mystery that has been attached to him. This dapper. gray-haired man was headlined in a popular magazine article as “Monte Carlo’'s Mysterious M i |- lionaire. One of the first mysteries that Mr, Onassis smilingly cleared up was that of his “improbable fore- names." Why did his parents be- stow upon the boy born at Smyrna, Turkey, not just one but two of the most celebrated names among the great philosophers of ancient Greece? “It was a local custom,” he ex- plained. ‘‘The Greeks of the home- land mostly give to their children Christian church names, but in the colonies on the Anatolian coast of Turkey, they used classic Greek names, to affirm their Hel lenic tradition."” His father's name was also Socrates, and his moth er's, Penelope. Mr, Onassis quickly destroyed one of the most widely - circulated rumors about him — that of his impecunious origins. *‘My father was one of the three most important businessmen in Smyrna (Ismir),’’ he said, and add ed that the family had lived in Turkey for several generations His father was a wealthy and influential tobacco merchant; he was in politics, too, and there was little love lost between his powerful clan and the Turks. In 1922, Kemal Ataturk’s Nation alists waged successful war on the Greek settlers along the coast They seized and sacked Smyrna} and other predominantly Greek cit jes on the mainland. A five-man committee, named by Lt. Gov. Clarence A. Reid, will open hearings at Lansing this fall on allegations that chain store op- erators’ shares of state taxes are too high. Present Michigan taxes were instituted in the early 19305 to prevent large chain stores from taking too much business from independent operators. But spokesmen for the chain own- ers point out that the feared mon- opoly never transpired, citing rec- ords that although chains received 24.8 per cent of the national retail business in 1935, they realized only 20.7 per cent in 1950. Under Michigan law any retailer with more than one outlet is de- fined as a chain. This means, the spokesmen say, that 9% per cent of the firms paying chain store taxes operate less than 10 stores. With the present system, the “little fellow” is being affected as much as the “giant,” they report. Among them are 352 au- tomobile retailers, motion pic- ture theater concessions, cigar stands and tombstone dealers, to mention a few, The taxes range from $10 per store for the second unit to $250 per store for all over 25 in one chain. The study committee will consist of Sens. Carlton Morris of Kala- mazoo, Harry F. Hittle of Lansing, Charles T. Prescott of Prescott, Claude Geerlings of Holland and Robert Haggerty of Detroit. Earl M. Douglas, general manager of the Studebaker Corp. plant in Los Angeles, has been appointed to take charge of all Studebaker manufacturing oper- ations. H. S. Vance, Studebaker president, said Douglas's new position carries the rank of vice president and that he expects the board of directors to elect Douglas to that rank at its next meeting.
