It shows a three per cent gain. This is cause for jubilation. In fact, it’s a life saver in the em- ployment situation in the general Pontiac area. ° eS Se ee '. Oddly, over the years that same situation has arisen many times. The late Wmu1aM L, Day, general man- ager a quarter of a century ago when Oakland (now Pontiac) was in a slump, observed that the truck plant seemed to forge ahead at a normal or better than normal pace. * * * Over an extended period of years Pontiac is fortunate to have had this true. It has meant a lot in the overall picture in this vicinity, While we may lack a diversity of industry, we are for- tunate to have a marked diversity within the industry that we do possess. - oe a Since World War I, the automotive ‘interests have been the national leader in all manufacturing. They led the way. Pontiac is plain lucky to have had this great pace setter so “thank you.” And often we forgot the thanks. Yes, the Truck & Coach division has been invaluable over the years as a steadying influence and a magnifi- cent balance wheel. We're All Profiting By His Many Patents In the passing of Lioyp G. Corr- MaN, this area loses an inventive genius with an international reputa- tion. x * * He held hundreds of patents. _ In fact, they outnumbered those granted to the great Edison. Most of these were conceived and worked out at his farm home just over the line in Lapeer County. There is hardly a life in our nation or major part of the world that is not influenced by what he wom, His patents included such things as the flexible rubber ice trays in your refrigerator, electric stove, pin- less clothes line, adhésive products, tamper proof envelope, auto grease system, bread toaster and a cigar- ette lighter that works. . He was a great lover of our native wildlife, and rescued ani- _mals from traps in the woods ' near his Metamora home, and made pets of them. But now the cars are flocking in from every State in the Union, and, all is rosy again. oe soe. . This. tourist business is no minor affair in Michigan. It brings mil- lions of dollars into the pockets of residents of the State, so when it slumps it is indeed a serious matter for many who are directly interested in and dependent on it for their live- - lihood. This year there seemed to be no Spring, so far as normal weather was concerned. And so the tour- ist business was in the doldrums. But come June 30, warm weather and vacation time arrived at the same moment, and the flood of incoming cars began. ‘There was no gradual start. It came with a rush. One week there was nobody, or so it seemed. Then all at once here it was. Thousands of tourists were on the highways. “No vacancy” signs began to appear along the wayside. * * * Stores were filled, bright colored bathing suits dotted the shores of our Great Lakes and the smaller inland lakes. Bait shops suddenly were doing a thriving business. In short, a busy, happy Michigan Summer season was on its. way. The Man About Town City’s Centennial Chamber of Commerce Has Boost for It in Bulletin ’ Husband: A persin who, if you have to drag him to a party, often has te be dragged away. One of MAT’s pet projects, observance of the centennial of our city's birth, is being given recognition in “Pontiaction,” the current issue of that house organ of the | Pontiac Chamber of Commerce, saying: “One of the biggest programs facing our conimunity is the celebration of our centennial in 1961, Much thorough preparation is necessary. Included in the planning is the drive to have the Cen- tennial Auditorium ready for use during the centennial year. After the committee has successfully promoted the auditorium, it will develop a definite celebration pro- gram for the centennial year. My Traverse City scout sends word that the annual Cherry Festival scheduled for this week, is ahead of time on account ef the late spring. Most of the cherries will not be ripe until a week or two later. —“Taiest Oakland County Tarm to be otti= clally designated as a centennial farm is that of , Mr. and Mrs. B. F. One of the victims of the air crash at Grand Canyon was a second cousin of Pontiac’s own ; C. George Widdifield, Rector of All Saints Episcopal church. He was an executive of the Sunbeam Corporation which had insured him for $50,000. In addition, he carried $136,000 himself. Truman himself probably would be the first to endorse the idea for, it will be recalled, it was General Eisenhower's magnanimity and friendliness to the then President - which caused him to refrain from running against Truman in the 1948 contest. He might have won. The story is told that Truman at Potsdam in 1945 told the vic- torious American Commander that there was no honor which he would not help the general to at- tain. It was then that Ike expressed his unwillingness to run for the presidency in 1948. Picked at the peak of ripeness and rushed to the Kool Krisp counters of Wrigley stores from many parts of the country are these appetizing fruits of summer that fit into any portion of your menus, from appetizer to dessert—-from breakfast to midnight snack, LUSCIOUS, vine-ripened western cantaloupes are truly an “any-time-of-the-day” food. Chilled contaloupes are an excellent breakfast fruit, a refreshing appetizer for lunch or dinner and a perfect dessert for any meal. ‘ In addition, they are very nutritious—high in vitamins and yet low in calories. ' . | A watermelon bow! can also double as a punch bow! for your favorite par melon as for the fruit bow], scoop out the fruit and chill both. Serve the fruit in chilled slices or chunks and fill the bowl with punch and ice. A nice combination is ginger ale and orange sherbet in the proportions of one quart of sherbet to two quarts of chilled ginger ale. No ice is necessary with this type of punch because the sherbet chills the ginger ale as it melts. He is reported to have made the top offer for the Tiger franchise. For a ball club in second division there hasn’t been few and the fans start streaming. So, actually what the “big top” at Michigan and Trumbull needs is a Tiger- tamer and not a ticket seller. x * * With the situation as it BILL VEECK He.is one guy who should know the financial value of a Major League team, and if the syndicate he heads actually made a bid of over five million dollars, then it should seem apparent that this is one time he isn’t clowning. bidder is a different story. x **« * Before the bidding started, Spike Briggs, president of the Tigers thought the franchise would bring at least $4,500,000. Veeck’s offer is said to be around $5,250,000. One thing Briggs was sure to mention was that “he was hopeful of staying on” with the new owners in some capacity, preferably in the same position as president. Another member of the three-man committee, which has been screening the bids of the eight syndicates,‘is Harry M. Sisson, who is also expressing his desire to stay with the club as secretary and business manager. a x * * So as it appears, part of the terms in the sale seem to lie in the “rider” clause. - Five of the eight syndicates supposedly have asked Briggs and Sisson to stay with the club, but has the highest bidder made the offer to them? It would seem unlikely for Veeck to make such an of- fer. This was made quite clear at Cleveland when some of the stockholders in the club tried to put a damper on Veeck’s authority. x * * c We doubt very much if Veeck would want any of tHe franchise. With Veeck in the driver’s seat, Briggs and Sisson may see the handwriting on the wall because Spike was using a-subtle tone when he hinted that the franchise would not especially have to go to the highest bidder. a One way for Briggs to retain the presidency of the club would be to sell the franchise to the Knorr Broad- casting Corporation of Dearborn, which is said to be the fourth highest bidder at $5,000,000. The reason is very simple. It is somewhat common . knowledge that Briggs is listed by the Federal Com- ° munications Commission as one of the stockholders of the Knorr corporation, holding about 141 of the 1,875 shares of stock. : ) gens, Texas welterweight, cham- pign, in a non-title bout.
