Faster X-Rays Work Wonders Bureau of Standards Opens Public Showing of New Developments WASHINGTON (INS) — Broad new fields in the use of X-rays— from treating deep-seated cancers to seeing through 18 inches of steel—are being explored today by government scientists. : Results were placed. on exhibit Monday night when the National Bureau of Standards opened its doors to the public for the first time in 17 years Highlight of the program is the X-ray televising of the internal parts of an operating engine in the new betatron laboratory. The lab houses a 50-million volt betatron and an 1480-millien volt electron accelerators to produce X-rays which permit man to see for the first time through 14 inches of steel or 90 inches of | concrete. Moving parts of a one-cylinder circuit television by converting to visible light the invisible X-rays. The audience could clearly see the piston and rod in motion. Several hospitals already have initiated , treatments with high energy X-rays for cancer and re- lated diseases. In industry, detection of small flaws im large metallic castings er assembied mechanisms has always been a major problem. Strong absorption of low energy X-rays by most materials has sharply limited the thickness that could be penetrated, but high energy X-rays reduce the diffusion and penetrate deeper. The visual image may be photo- graphed by an ordinary camera, televised on a closed circuit or observed by eye, if precautions are taken against radiation. Scouts and Parents Attend Dinner Meet Some 9% Boy Scouts and their parents attended a pot-luck dinner and Boy Scout Week celebration this week at Weaver School. The affair, held in observance of 29, sponsored by the fathers of scouts attending Hawthorn School. Lester Stanley, Hawthorne prin- cipal, spoke briefly and showed a film. James Card, troop committee member, discussed the history of scouting and welcomed the guests. Scoutmaster Roger Lawrence in- troduced neighborhood counselor commissioner Glenn “Lackey, rep- resenting Clinton Valley Council. The Geological Survey said there are about 950,000,000,000 tons of recoverable coal reserves in the United States. This is more than one-third of the total world supply.
