Harrrick has ruled in behalf of the vast majority of the citizens of this area in his de- cision gn the Grand Trunk injunc- tion. . Certainly our people want Pontiac Motor Division and Fisher Body to be given every possible opportunity to grow and provide more employment. * * * Jobs and a livelihood are a “must” and a necessity. The dis- trict under consideration is a manufacturing sector and has been forever. — The area is zoned for manu- facturing. If we are to have jobs and employment, the factories must exist somewhere. This is the spot selected more than a quarter of a century ago and growth is probable and even in- evitable. Most cities in the United States are growing appreciably. The Pontiac Motor Division can only maintain its place in industry by going forward. The overwhelm- ing majority of the people want this to continue. Anything we can do as a community or as individuals to as- sist progress and growth comes in the light of a public duty. * 2 No one wishes to harm resi- _ dences in the north, the. south, the east or the west. At the same time, the plant can only expand where it is. The switching facili- ties will be installed to help Pontiac and Fisher in the fu- ture. Further activities in these plants would have been assigned to other plants in other places. “Pontiacs are assembled already in half a dozen cities across the nation. - x € £ The bulk of the people here would prefer to have as much future work _ as possible done locally. Cities struggle and raise big sums of local money to induce new indus- tries to settle in their midsts. Here we have a huge plant that is willing to grow locally if it can, and it will absolve the community of all costs. : The Press favors progress and - te Steel-100 Years Old ———While- the first ironworks in the ‘United States was built at Saugas, Mass. about 1646, it was not until. 1857 that the steel industry had its At that time Wri1m KELLY im Kentucky and Sir Henry Bessemer in England developed similar methods of producing large amounts of steel quickly . and economically. B. Warp of Detroit built the Chica- _ go Rolling Mill just outside that city. This mill was to re-roll iron rails” and‘ was the first to roll experimental steel rails in‘ America. In that year also the first iron ore railway in the Lake Superior region was completed. It ran from the mines in the Marquette range of Michigan to the port of Mar- quette. The first commercial heat of steel by the pneumatic process in the country was at Wyandotte in 1864. x *.« * BENJAMIN Farress, head of the American Iron and Steel Institute, foresees structures of stainless steel changing the whole appearance of our metropolitan centers. He believes that steel will bring incredible air transport speeds, wider use of elec- tronics, solar energy and atomic : power industry. This year’s. celebration of the Age of Steel commemorates the first cen- tury of one of the wonders of indus- trial civilization. The next 100 years should see new progress in raising the living standards not only of Americans but of people in other parts of the world. The Man About Town Great Extremes Local Weather Watchers Make Some Observations Weather{” What — everybody knows what to do about, but con- fines it to talking. Several of our readers consider this to be the spring of the greatest tempera- ture extremes during their many years of observance. In nearly a half century, Hiram Atterbury of Waterford has never registered a day in May when the mercury was at less than half the figure of the corresponding day in April—39 and 82 degrees. Never before did Mrs. Burnedette Folsom of Birmingham see a May day when the mercury skidded more than half the dis- tance to zero in four hours—from 78 to 36 degrees. ‘ And never before in 30 odd years -did Harley Pinkston of Rochester, see the average tempera- ture. of 15 days in May range 10 degrees below the same ten days in April. But the most unique report comes from. Norman Holtsworth of Keego- Harbor, who says it was so hot when he planted his garden that he did it in a bathing suit while his wife held a parasol over him, but he wears an overcoat while cultivating it. Not many people who live past the four “score mark are survived by a parent. But such was the case with Arthur Markley of Pontiac, who died last week at the age of 81, leaving his mother : Mrs. Ida Markley of Armada, aged 97. es Many other towns are.in the same. . category as Oxford whose community center situation is summed up by Jim Sherman in his Oxford Leader as “not having left the stables.” ; Local draft beards are asked to send only 17 men to the army as their June quota. The Pontiac City board sends only three, and the out-county board sends 14. The induction date for both is June 5. , Their mother having been killed by an_ automobile, four young squirtels are be- ing reared at the home of at Walled Lake. When beds are full, all the money they possess can't provide them, even though life depends on it. I hope Congress listens to isms and has a yardstick based on Christian foundations of our Amer- jean democracy, Would you turn down a program for areas in our country where average wage earn- ers get less than $500 annually? Would you cut hospital and health aid to areas where the death rate is 42 per cent above the national average? Such cuts are being made in our services to the Ameri- can Indian and construction of four hospitals is being deferred because of fear of inflationary pressure. M. The board failed to give Miss Paul her contracted raise, despite the fact that Miss Paul continued to perform her services above and beyond the call of duty. It was accepted by the board.” The board asked for her resigna- tion. Why couldn't they be honest?
