Western Nations Join in Program on Suez The eighteen nation conference which met recently in London reached agreement for action on the seizure of the Suez Canal by Egypt. Its agreement was not unanimous, but a majority of the nations agreed to the program that was finally adopted, and more are expected to ~ approve it after their home govern- ments have had a chance to study the plan in detail. x * * Briefly these nations plan to draw up a plan for international control of the canal and seek the endorse- ment of the United Nations Security Council. They will seek Egyptian cooperation in seeing that their na- tions’ ships are assured safe and orderly use of the canal. Finally, if their ships find the canal closed to them, they will plan ways to bypass the canal. One representative of each of the nations approving the new Suez Users’ Association is to meet at London on Oct. 1. This group will seek to carry out the program outlined above. The new group’s threat to bypass Suez in case Egypt refuses to make any concessions, opens up interest- ing possibilities. Oil pipelines have been mentioned which would bring manufacturing pio- . “The hew group hopes that this threat will be sufficient to cause President Nassex of Egypt to agree to some compromise, such as an in- ternational voice in control of the ~ “Canal; Whether this happens prob- ably depends largely on whether Nasser believes the new group can carry out so ambitious a program. x * * At any rate, the new approach minimizes the danger of a shooting war, at least for some time, and increases the possibili- ty of some sort of compromise. At Least Let’s Make the Detour Smooth Thousands of Pontiac areca resi- dents are being inconvenienced by the delay in construction of the grade separation at Orchard Lake avenue and Telegraph Road. Many of them are convinced that if those in charge of this job had been on their toes in lining up the steel needed, it would have been possible to continue the work without inter- ruption. x *« * As it stands, nothing is being done, and work will not be re- sumed until next spring. Mean- while, the usual heavy traffic is going around a detour which is delaying thousands of people each day as they go to and from their work, , x * * However, as if that were not bad enough, the detour has buckled in a couple of spots so that motorists are wearing out their tires at an un- necessarily rapid rate. The least those in charge might do is to smooth out. the detour so that, slow going as it is with its sharp curves, at least the roadbed would be smooth.
