Is the safety of the United States govern- ment and of the American people of paramount importance .or is it to be superseded by legalistic bar- riers now advocated to spare government employes the hazards of investigation? Is even dismissal by the govern- ment as a matter of precaution, to be subjected to frustrating devices so that ferreting out of subversives is to be made more difficult? He was Pinocchio—a little wooden puppet who wanted to be a real boy. The story was written by Carlo Lorenzini, who called himself ‘Collodi."’ _. Pinocchio wanted to be good, but kept telling things that really weren't so. As punishment, his nose began to grow and grow. It got so long he ran inte furniture and into walls. When he promised to be good, it shrank to normal size. But Pinocchio started being bad again. This time his ears grew into donkey's ears. Finally he learned his lesson. But he had to do many good deeds before his ears returned to normal size. 1, Give Pincechio a bright hat and also color the dots on his collar. Make his face pink, with red cheeks and a red nose. Color the long nose at the bottom of today’s picture pink. Make the donkey ears brown. 4 2. Paste the picture on stiff paper. Cut out the four pieces. Cut through the dotted line on Pinocchio’s nose, and punch through the holes in his ears and in the donkey ears. 3. Put the donkey ears behind the head and fasten them to the real ears with small brass fasteners. Push the long nose through the slit in the real nose. Make it grow by pushing it out as far as it will go. Make the donkey ears wiggle. 4. - You can punch a hole in the cap, and put a string through it if you want to hang Pinocchio in your window. Lobbyists Set for Legislature 300 in ‘Third House’ Gathered in Lansing to ‘Help’ Lawmakers LANSING (UP) — Michigan's biggest bloc of ‘lawmakers’ had to watch from the galleries when 34 senators and 110 representatives were sworn into the State Legis- lature today. They were the lobbyists—mem- bers of the Legislature's powerful “third house.” Some 300 lobbyists were expected to register for this year’s session, which means there will be at least two lobbyists for every legislator. State officials say the lobbyists —once pictured as influence ped- diers lurking in cloakrooms and trading free dinners and money for passage of legislation—play a vital role in the reflection of public opinion. “They render a great public service,” Fred Chase, secretary of the Senate said, “They come right in and lay their cards on the table.” Norman E. Philleo, clerk of the House, said lobbyists “give information the Legislature wouldn't get any other way.” In 1947 a law was enacted to “license ligislative agents, and to regulate their activities.” Lobbyists were defined as any advocating, or opposing’ any mat- ter pending before the Legislature. They were required to file sworn statements giving in detail the nature of any financial transac- tions with legislators. Lobbyists are not allowed in the legislative chambers—or even in the cloakrooms—when the houses are in session. ; The very presence of so many lobbyists is a regulation in itself.
