  MEMBER .OP AUDIT BUREAU OF CIRCULATIONS
  SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 194
World. Church Council
History, Christian history, is being
written at Evanston, Ill., these days at
‘the second meeting of the World Coun-
cil of Churches.
Representatives from the world over
are seeking to carry out the prayer of
Jesus Christ made shortly before his
crucifixion, “That they may all be one.”
* * *
Although it may be an idle
| dream to hope for this human
achievement, yet it is inspiring to
know that some 161 denomina-
tions from 48 countries are hon-
estly facing what they believe to
be the command of Christ and
seeking to overcome disunity.
In these meetings are Christians from
foreign lands in native dress gathered
under signs such as Ethiopia, Mexico,
Iran and a host of other lands. Here
some 600 voting delegates sit at long
tables in the arena and behind them are
some 800 non-voting churchmen. Eh | — * * ~ — .
~~‘Regardiess of what is really accom-
plished at this meeting, this group can-
not help but make a great impact upon
the thinking world. They will not
arrange mergers but seek to create
understandings that may lead to later
consolidations.

Defense of Formosa
~~~ President EisenHoWwer has senatorial
  ___ment that orders to the Seventh Fleet
to protect Formosa against Red Chinese
attack still stands.
It came from Sen. H. ALEXANDER
SmitH, chairman of the Far East sub-
committee of the powerful Senate
Foreign Relations Committee. Mr.
EIsENHOWER’s remark was in answer to
a question prompted by a Peiping state-
ment attributed to Premier Cou En Lal.
The latter said only a week ago
that Communist China would
Warning the United States
against interfering he added, “the
ereignty and China's own in-
ternal affair. We will brook no
foreign interference.”
In Washington no fear is felt that our
the policy stated by President E:sen-
  Rigid Parity Ended
Previously unemphasized facts show
the President's victory in the flexible
farm price supgort fight to have been
more complete than at first supposed.
At the outset the Administration
sought a flexible support range of from
75 to 90 per cent of parity. A compro-
mise between opposing forces resulted
in agreement on a range of 82.5 to 90
per cent. What wasn’t clear at the time
is that this compromise range applies _—
to wheat alone and then only for a year.
* * *
‘Beginning at the end of 1955
the range of 75 to 90 per cent of
parity will be in full operation
with respect to five of the six
basic crops, with tobacco excepted.
In other words, as the American Farm
Bureau points out, Congress has aban-
doned rigid price fixing. This action,
President ALLAN B. Kine says, “will be
applauded by a great majority of farm-
ers.”
It also will have the approval of con-
sumers and all thoughtful persons who
realize the economic folly of a policy
~-whictr breeds unmanageable farm crop
surpluses.
The People’s Business —
Prisons Improved? Officials Fear Bigger Size
Will Make Situation Worse
By JAMES A. 0. CROWE
(For Jack I. Green)
LANSING—There is no complacency with-
in the Corrections Commission or its staff
that Wednesday’s special session of the
Legislature solved Michigan's prison crowd-
ing emergency.  .----
In fact,-there are commissioners and staff
members who will say privately that Gov.
Williams and the lawmakers combined to
make things -worse, if anything.
These peoplé understandably don't
want to put their heads on the chopping
block by coming out in the open with
~ their opinion. But they say that the best
that was done was only a temporary and
partial relief.
The lawmakers appropriated $400,000 to .
build-a 234-man dormitory including 78 cells
and housing the rest of the men in open-type
dormitory rooms. Williams had asked for
$660,000 to provide cells for all the men.
This new building, which will not be ready
for_full_oceupancy for atleasta year, will
increase the population of Ionia Reformatory
by about 156 to a total of about 1,450. An ex-
isting dormitory, now housing 78 men, will
be incorporated in the new building.
Going Williams one better, the law-
makers appropriated $50,000 to build a
new dormitory for 100 more men outside
the walls of Southern Michigan Prison.
They largely ignored his request for money
to hire more guards except for providing four
new guards at the CassidyLake- Training
by 25 inmates.
Willtams called the special session because,
he said, something had to be done in a hurry
to relieve mushrooming population that is
fast becoming a security problem. The pris-
—ons now hold about 1,000 more than they
were designed for, he said.
He said that net only was the overall
population rise important, but that a
shift towards younger and younger of-
fenders was taking place that alse had to
be taken inte consideration.
Only 15 per cent of the present prison fa-
cilities are designed for youthful offenders,
he said. But in recent years the proportion
of prisoners under 25 years has skyrocketed
to 40 *per cent.
The worried prison people admit that the new dormitory was put in the right place—
at the reformatory which is designed entire-
ly for young prisoners ;
But their concern is that the expansions
only make a bad situation—the size of Mich-
igan’s prisons—worse.
It is axiomatic that Southern Michigan
Prison, with more than 6,000 men both
inside and outside the walls, is far too
big now, especially compared with fed-
eral standards of a maximum prison
population of 600 men.
On the same standard, the Ionia Reform-
atory is already more than two times too i¢< =.
On Gov. Williams’ recommendatian, the
Legislature made Ionio bigger and on its
own, it boosted Southern Michigan Prison by
another 100 men, | ‘
The worriers say they are afraid that the
prison system has been a political football
“We haven't had a major overhauling
of prison building program since South -
erm Michigan Prison was built in the
mid-1920s,” said one official who asked
anonimity.
They are the ones who—
Your Better Business Board is powerless to cancel your signed
Your Face The color closest to your face;
namely, the shade of your lip-
from your complexion. Lipstick
is one make-up item that can be
Unlike powder, rouge, and eye-
carefully blended.
Her lipstick is often a part of
a woman's personality as well as
a part of her daily make-up.
Beauty-wise, the correct use of
lipstick can make “problem” lips
look larger or smaller. The cor-
rect shade also serves as @
whiter, brighter teeth.
Fashion-wise, when the shade
of your lipstick complements
those in your wardrobe, you can
create a complete color har-
mony in your costumes.
Frequently, a woman will
choose one lipstick shade and
expect it to do everything for her.
Sometimes it's a dark shade of
red that gives the illusion of a
‘hard lipline and a tired facial
expression.
Village of Rochester,
cally nil in this one-story white
brick structure. . The “free”?
angles produce a third and even
a fourth dimension in vision
line.
Ceilings, too, with open and
exposed beams, are part. of the
angle-act. Corner windows and
mirrored walls follow the same
—pattern—with- windows extending
from ceiling-to-floor in bedrooms,
living and dining rooms.
LIVING-PORCH—Even the screened. in sections of the outdoor
porch are set in at angles appearing to extend this cool living unit
into the surrounding woods. Photo at the upper left shows the house
view from the 75-foot ravine which drops off to a meandering stream
at the foot of the steep hill. Windows are placed face-to-face on the
odd-angled corriers of the house and are ceiling-to-floor to invite
With the exception of the bed-
them in perfect shape.
The fireplace wall of the living
room with draperies in a neutral
homespun tweed.
The dining room is actually
part of the living room, but it —
has its own demarcation line in
furnishings and in the series of
telling lights which run the full
length of its area.
Adjacent is a wide hallway
separating the kitchen from the
living room. This passageway
also serves to give access to this section of the house without pass-
ing through the living room.
An added function is provided
with its sliding frosted glass
doors on one side making is pos-
sible to pass food through for
informal dining.
