After tentative rates are set, , county, township and school of- ficials wil] be given a chance te ask the board for changes, The tax allocation board must see that county, township and school taxes in any area do not total more than 15 mills ($15 on each $1,000 of assessed property) unless it is by a vote of the people. A higher county equalized valua- tion of $966,608,754—up $121,000,000 from last year—is expected to ease the financial squeeze in some cases, The increase means that each tax mill allowed will raise more money than last year. The county is first on the agen- da Thursday. It will ask the board for a tax rate high enough to raise the $4,907,000 it needs to balance next year’s $6,513,164 county | budget. On that first Memorial Day in 1868 the flags, the parades and the martial music were in tribute to the men who ance has come to be all inclusive. * * * The flags we fly today and the tributes we voice do grateful honor to all who have died not only to establish or preserve the Union, but te safeguard the free- doms we enjoy under it. Most of us well remember the anxiety with which we watched our casualties Increase in Korea, in World War II and ‘the First World conflict, In this period of continuing international tension it 4s cause for national gratification that the young men who wear the uniforms pf our armed services are not now en- aged in shooting war. * *« * But there is another aspect of this day which should not be for- gotten. It is the opportunity pro- vided us to ask ourselves whether — we, the living, are worthy of the sacrifices made by all those who sleep in soldier graves. If we are to be worthy of them we must be so unselfishly devoted in the service of our country that our heroic dead shall not have died in vain. For Sane July Fourths Long. needed Federal, action, for safe and sane July Fourths has beén taken in the Senate. By a vote of 73 to 3 the upper chamber approved a bill prohibit- ing the shipment of fireworks into the 36 states, including Mich- igan, which ban or regulate their sale and use. x * * no Passage of this bill which mak manufacturers liable for violation with penalities of fines and prison terms, was a victory won over long and bitter opposition of the fireworks lobby. Sen. Wiizy pointed out during the de- bate that bootlegging from other states ~ and mail order fireworks made neces- sary a Federal law covering interstate commerce. The Wisconsin Republican of- fered strong argument for the bill. by. quoting accident statistics from Illinois which, like Michigan, bans fireworks. In two years, he said, 486 fireworks accidents were reported. Of these 112 caused seri- ous injuries. Among the victims were 13 children who lost the sight of one or both eves. x * * As amended in the Senate, the House passed bill becomes effective July 1 and exempts common, contract or water car- riers from liability. It would permit in- terstate transportation of fireworks for the use of Federal agencies and during a _, limited period, for agricultural purposes. It was a victory, too, for com- mon sense, for the children of America and for the parents who no longer will have to look ahead to the Fourth of July with fear and dread. DDT Warning Seconded Raymonp Ketter, Superintendent of Pontiac’s City parks, endorses a warning sounded at Cranbrook against the in- diseriminate use of DDT in fighting tent caterpillars. The warning came from WALTER P. NIckgLL, Cranbrook entomologist. While reporting that the gypsy moth has not appeared in the county, he said Oakland is suffering from a heavy infection of tent caterpillars. In discussing use of DDT to combat this pest, he warned that too much of it would be harmful to wild life and pets. Supt. Kevver says his depart- ment is anxious to hear about ail cases of tent caterpillars. He adds that it combats them with DDT on a carefully controlled basis. After pointing out that there are two schools of thought on the subject, he voiced the opinion that overuse of this poison is harmful to animal life and can upset the balance of nature. If you have tent caterpillars in your trees, don’t rush in with DDT.
