Gen. Thomas M. Kav anagh. Kavanagh notified the state Pub- ‘lie Service Commission that it ’ gould not approve escalator clauses in rate schedules which increase rates without notice and hearing. His ruling referred to a recent Consumers Power statement that its rates would ‘be increased a- proximately two per cent because of the higher cost of gas which it must: purchase from wholesalers. Consumers had been authorized by the commission May 6, 1954, to place in effect a new rate. schedule containing a “pur- chased gas cost adjustment clause.” The order was issued by the commission without a hearing. Kavanagh held also that the cost adjustment clause could not be in- corporated in later rate schedules even after a public hearing, and said “‘no increase in the rates of a public utility may occur without prior notice and hearing.” Suffers Broken Elbow When Struck by Auto Mrs, Mary Byrd, 59, of 89 Hill- side Dr., sufféred a broken elbow Monday night when she was hit by an auto attempting a left turn onto Baldwin Ave. from Mont- calm St. against a traffic signal, was treated at Pontiac General Hospital and released. French actress Yvonne Menard weats a mink jacket over her bathing suit as she *| drives the scooter to work each day, Durante at Home "|Video Brass Cool Heels as Jimmy Hosts Milkman By JAMES BACON . HOLLYWOOD i#.— A visit to Jimmy Durante’s modest home in Beverly Hills is an experience not unlike trying to drive to the Rose Bowl 10 minutes before game time. The crush is terrific. I've been to Durante’s many times, and never have seen less than.10 people at any given time. Take the other day, juct as an example, . * + A couple of NBC executives had called to talk over a business deal. I had dropped in for what might laughingly be called in interview. An electrician was working in the front room, oblivious. to Eddie Jackson, Jules Buffano anc a half dozen other members of the Du- rante entourage. The network brass cornered Jimmy but not for long He was at the piano with an apologetic nod to the executives: “I [ust tot of somethin’.” * - * He played a few bars and yelled at Jackson: “Try singin’ it dis way, Eddie."’ Jackson was into his famous strut and singing like he was the closing act at the Palace. Durante, cigar in his mouth, sang along without gestures. He stopped tbe music, aaid a word or two to me and rejoined the executives. But only for a minute. The door- bell rang and Jimmy answered it, in person, It was a new milkman who didn’t know he had Durante for a |' customer. Durante grabbed him by the arm and took him on a tour ‘of the house. Again he apologized to the executives: “I wanted to show him de jernt so he wouldn't leave no sour milk.” e = ae ey es business “Tt'’s been ready since noon,” she yelled back twice as loud, It was now 4 p.m. He sat down and beckoned me and the executives to join him: “When Durante eats, everybody | eats.” The executives had coffee and left, Jimmy disclosed they wanted him to stick more to a story line in his TV format, a Ld * “T told them okay. Dose writers got brains so I give ‘em credit but don't forget Durante knows sometin’ about laffs too, I'll stick to de story but I'm warnin’, don’t make it quiet. When people see Durante, they wanna hear lots of noise,"” With that he sat down at the of the best barrelhouse piano I) piano again and improvised some ever heard. * * Ff “How d'ya like dat? I don't even know what I’m playin’.”” Then he said, “here's a song I wrote.”’ As the went into ‘I Can Do Widdout picked up a stray golf club instead of his cane, cocked a fedora in- stead ‘of a top hat. It was show- time again and the two walked off in the famous Durante walkaway. Two more people came in the front door. Jimmy greeted them in friendly f4shion although it was obvious he couldn't remember their names, He yelled for the cook to fix some corn flakes. * Ls * “IT got a millyun boxes of da stuff, I had a cornflakes sponsor last year. I ate da stuff for 30 years before it paid off.” Reluctantly I had to leave, Jim- my walked me to the door. “Why don’t you drop in some- Three K. C. Prof. Boris A, Rybakev, back from a Manhattan visit, reports in an interview that he found many pleasant surprises. Rybakov, a historian, and botan- ist Andrei L, Kursanov represented Soviet scholars at the 200th an- niversary jubilee of Columbia Uni- versity in November Nearly two months after their return Rybakov's impressions ap- peared in the paper. Among them: On the New York skyline: ‘‘To paraphrase an old Russian proverb, ‘You can't see the city for the buildings’.’’ On New York skyscrapers in general: “It's impossible to keep from admiring these buildings, the tallest in the world, But, at the same time, you can't help being surprised at the lack of architec- tural taste.” (He thinks they are too plain.) Broadway: ‘Considerably jess ‘broad’ than (Moscow's) Sado- vaya or Meshchanskaya streets.” Times Square: “A gigantic fair where each advertisement tries te outshout every other one.” Noise: “Contrary to our. expec- tations, New York didn’t impress us as a noisy city. The reason is that the numerous vehilcies do not sound their horns often.” Museum of Natural History: “Wonderful, excellent displays.” Museum of Modern Art: ‘We can’t call these pictures anything but a mockery of art.” St, John's Cathedral: “As huge and uncozy as a railroad station.” Wall Street: ‘Streets resem- ble narrow gorges and the gloom. lest of these is Wall Street.” Except for the speeches (‘‘rath- er solemn and humdrum'’), the professor seems to have enjoyed himself at the opening banquet of the Columbia festivities. The Soviet visitors were sur. prised to learn that class attend ance isn't compulsory for Colum- bia students. They were disappoint- ed not to fing any history books written by Soviet stholars in the library, and shocked to learn “American students study Soviet history from textbooks written by White (Russian) emigres."’ The professor's report could j hardly be called an unqualified en- dorsement of “the American way Say Rhee Meeting With Aides at Home SEOUL ® — Informed sources Coughs Rough? hel e coughs due to fast— Lear 1 **F aioe feel- ing. ing.
