As they are our guests I know we shotild take, them out to dinner. However, we feel we cannot afford to do this in addition to the theater tickets. ‘Under these circumstances, Plus the fact that the dinner out was her idea, would it be permissible to let them pay for the dinner, or would it be out of order to suggest we go ‘Dutch Treat?" Answer: As there Was cer- tainly no need for your friend to mention dinner, the fact _that she hag written you not to have dinner at home and to dine out with her and her husband means that they real- ly want to do their part by paying for it. It would be bet- ter to let them do this rather than to risk seeming unappre- ciative of their kind intention. “Dear Mrs. Post: When a man and girl go to a cafeteria for something to eat, shouldn’t the man precede her so that when they reach the end of the line where the cashier is seated, he can pay for her food? Then, on Christ- mas Eve, 1955, she became completely paralyzed on her left side. TOOK COURAGE There followed days of agony and courage, and slowly, she began to walk again. Her steps iwere merely a shuffle, then she developed a “‘roll like a seaman.” Now she walks without a limp. In September 1956, Eva Bur- nay was back doing fashion shows. But the work was so taxing that she decided to open an agency. * * * She employs 40 models and two assistants, handles admin- istrative details, trains some models, supervises their make- up and helps them during fash- jon shows and test-shot assign- ments. But she does not do any modeling herself. “It wouldn't be fair to the girls,"’ she said. “And if some- one didn’t like my work, he wouldn't want to call the agen- cy and ask for someone else.” BIGGEST OBSTACLE What was the hardest part of her comeback? “Getting used to being with people again. It was difficult to follow the fast movement and talk. I remember the first time I went to a restaurant, I had to turn around and go out —just couldn't face it. “At work, I had to go into a quiet corner because I didn't have enough strength to talk and work at the same time. “But working helps eventual- ly,” she added. ‘‘Activity felt good, although it exhausted me to lift something.” * * * Miss Burney still is under medical care and continues her practice of ‘‘refueling'’—spend- ing 15 minutes alone at the end of a working day to rest and regain strength. * * * “Oddly, it never occurred to me that I wouldn't be able to walk again, so I was never frightened,”’ she said. PERSEVERED “TI pivoted into every piece of furniture in the apartment. My shoes wouldn't stay on. I got dizzy in the middle of Park Avenue. I couldn't go down stairs. * * * “I remember my first show — after I could walk. There were six stairs at the head of the ramp. I started out, took one look at the man sponsoring the show, and had to go back—he looked so scared that I got frightened. “But I tried again and made it. I realized I didn’t dare fall —a little woman was sitting by the stairs, and I knew if I fell, I'd crush her.” PHS Class of ‘53 Plans Reunion Plans for a reunion are in the offing by members of the Pontiac High School January graduating class of 1953. HE SHONE “David was asked to do a small part in a picture with his father last year,” says his proud mother, “but he was such a standout in even a bit part that the studio decided ta give him a real chance. Alan had turned down a part in ‘The Proud Rebel,’ but when they offered the boy's part to Da- vid, he changed his mind.”’ * * * The beautiful living room of the Ladd home, with picture windows overlooking a stage- lighted swimming pool and a tropical garden, is a constant bechive of activity, talked, 15-year-old Lonnie, a budding glamor girl, rushed in and out to ask her mother’s advice on a new dance dress, an algebra problem and how to make David wash his hands. &. & ££ Mrs. Ladd is a former movie actress and Hollywood talent agent, who married her favor- ite client. In addition to Lon- nie and David, there are two ' older children—Carol Lee, now Mrs. John Veitch, Sue's daugh- ter by het first marriage, and Alan Jr.. or “Laddie,” Alan's 21-year-old son, now a student . at USC, As we a lieutenant commander when the plane aboard which he he served crashed in the Pa- cific and never was found. FOUND TEACHING JOB Three years after the war, Mrs. Needle was able to begin working at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where she taught nurse's aide classes, a job She says was most satisfying. The girls were then all-day students at St. Hugo of the Hills School. * * * Today, Mrs. Needle, still at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, is a nurse on the women's sur- gical floor. Her daughter, Don- na, is a freshman student at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., working toward a B.S. Degree in nursing. She was graduated magna cum laude from St. Frederick High School's June, 1958, class. Diane, now a senior at St. Frederick's isn’t quite certain just what her future will hold. Both girls play the piano and often enjoy accompanying their mother to concerts. Dr. Needle was a music major be- fore transferring to medicine | in college. PROUD OF GIRLS Needless to say, Mrs, Needle is extremely proud of her girls and ‘‘just being together’ seems to be the biggest treat for this close-knit family, * * * Being a nurse and mother, Mrs. Needle doesn't find time for too many outside activities, Ithough she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Oakland County District Nurses’ Association and holds membership in St. Joseph's Guild at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Mrs. Needle and her girls face the new year with confi- dence They learned long ago that if they trust in God and work together, they can over- come life's hurts. Adlai, Johnson By EARL WILSON NEW YORK — Jack Paar, a middle-westerner, tells us he’s recommended to NBC that it hire Jonathan Winters, another middle-westerner, to take over his show two nights a week to take some of the pressure off him. “I don’t really care who they get, I swear to God,” Jack told me, “but I think Johnny’s got more talent than any other eight guys around.” Strangely enough, Johnny and Jack had supposedly been having a feud lately. It all stemmed from some remarks attributed to Winters in a New York in- terview. Johnny didn’t deny he said them. But he called Jack on Christmas day and said he was sorry. WILSON Paar indicated he understood the circumstances and was forgiving. Jack had also recommended Johnny Carson and Dick Van Dyke and had indicated that NBC should try to get Ernie Kovacs — although he made it clear he didn’t think Ernie would be available now that he’s a Hollywood star. x * * Paar says the present taping set-up (allowing him to work earlier two or three nights a week) won't change his de- mands that he work less. How- ever, he will go to Paris for a week in April to tape some cut in half. | __ Shows — which’ll be sent back iby jet to be shown the same Believes Williams Has Good Chance of Being Dem Choice in 1960 LANSING ® — While Paul M. Butler, Democratic National chair- man, rates high the presidential possibilities of Gov. Williams in 1960, he discounts those of Adlai E. Stevenson and Sen. Lyndon F.
