ganizing the Pontiac Table Tennis
(PTTA) back in 1935,
Typical of many men who hate to lose to a woman in
any sport, it took a humiliating drubbing at the hands
of his sister-in-law to get him started in the sport.

“I played just occasionally, and never really gave it
much thought,” said Secord,” until the time I visited my
brother in St. Louis, Mich.”
“After my sister-in-law gave me a lacing, 1 was
determined to learn the game. I did, and then I
went back to beat her,” he added.
That was in 1933 when table tennis was in its infant
stage. Couple of the well known players in the area in-
cluded Fred Panky and Ben Ronan.
‘“.:% .* |
After the Michigan Table Tennis Association was born
in 1933 in Royal Oak, Se-
cord and Ronan and several
others decided to organize
the Pontiac chapter. E
- “In fact I can credit the
Pontiac Press with much of
the interest that kept me
playing the game,” said
Secord.

Carol Ryan, pretty Central Michigan College coed from
Waterford, and Ellen Tiffany of Pontiac, cleaned up
honors in the state.

Miss Tiffany won the Michigan Girls Single cham-
pionship and she defeated Miss Ryan to do it. ;
Oddly enough, Carol came back to win the Women's
championship and she did it by defeating Ellen in
the finals.
In the junior boys ranks, Johnny Wettlaufer walked
off with state honors and he then teamed with Jerry
Kruskie to take doubles honors.

said Elmer Klemm, the current president of the PTTA.
_ ‘The organization is off to another season with 40
_ members. “There is no pre-requisite, just the desire
to play,” said Klemm.
That should be a good enough invitation for anyone
‘who wants to play, or even learn to play the fast grow-
ing sport of table tennis, and anyone in Oakland County
s elgile for merabership in the Pontiac Table Tennis G Association. ee
