FITZGERALD President and Publisher _ . Editorial Page FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1958 MEMBER OF THE ~ ASSOCIATED PRESS Where Were You on Monday? A new City Commission will take office in. Pontiac Monday night, elect a mayor from their number, and em- ~ bark upon a two-year stint of oper- . ting this complex and growing city. “New” is not a wholly accurate term, as four of the seven Commis- Pontiac Trackmen Staying Out Front Winning of the Mansfield (Ohio) Relays last weekend by Pontiac High School’s track and field team is an- other entry in an outstanding record built up in the past few years. The team victory at Mansfield was taken in competition which drew some 1,700 top high school athletes. Win- ning titles has become almost — routine for the Chiefs. . x «*« * Our Chiefs’ first state champion- ship was acquired in 1955. Since then two more state titles have been add- ed, and the powerful array of track and field talent is apparently headed for another—a fourth straight cham- pionship—for this. season. . Pontiac’s fabulous Hayes Jones, currently a red hot Olympic pros- pect rose to prominence in 1955, Jed the Chiefs to their first title. He reached his prep zenith in 1956 when Pontiac again captured the MHSAA crown. x «kx * Few others have accomplished this high peak of achievement, — Hayes graduated in 1956. He went on to even greater heights in 1957 as a college freshman. His loss hit the Chiefs hard, but with what had been labeled an “average” squad, PCH once more brought home a state title. The ’57 win was a stunning surprise. xk © ® These last four years have been the _ brightest in the school’s history for the track team. me * row ke yay Let's look at the rest of our Chiefs’ _. ‘record during this period. They won the Huron Relays in 1956-1958. . They captured the Central | Michigan College titles for 1955-1956. . - They were victors in five straight MHSAA regionals (1953 through 1957). They won the Central Michigan outdoor title in 1955-1956. Twice they became the only Michigan school to win the great Mansfield, Ohio, Relays, in 1956 and again last weekend, They were Saginaw Valley champions in 1955-1956. xk *« -* Three current state records are held by PCH athletes — Jonzs’ 14.4 high hurdles mark (1956), ALonzo Harris’ 220 mark of 21.7 (1953), and Jowgs’ broad jump of 23 feet 8% inches (1956). Hi x * * great schoolboy teams goes to a corps of hard-working, dedicated coaches, starting with former head coach Ray then became chief aide for his suc- cessor, WALLY SCHLOERKE. SCHLOER- KE’s squad brought the first state title. ; After the 1956 season, SCHLOERKE retired as coach, and Dean WILson, who came here four years ago after four years at Traverse City was moved to the top post. Lowry has continued as assistant coach. Credit for development of these Lowry, who followed Harvey Nornis, . sioners were returned to office by voters in their respective districts in last Monday’s spring election. Three others are new to their jobs. K &: & Under our City Charter as amended by the voters a number of years ago all City Commission terms expire at the same time, and each Commis- sioner is elected solely by the voters in his district. This makes it possible for an entirely new (and inexperi- enced) Commission to take office some dismal April. Fortunately this has not happened. The original City Charter car- ried a protection against this‘ by staggering terms of Commission- ers; and a successful candidate was required to have a majority — backing of a city-wide vote. a fo BO Roos . _ Whether or not voters in the seven districts have made wise choices for their representatives at City Hall will perhaps be better known after watch- ing the Commission in action over the coming months. Regrettable is the fact that only slightly under a fourth of the eligible voters cast ballots Monday. The total vote was slightly better than two years ago: 8,848 as against 8,600 in 1956. But 37,000 were eligible to vote. Must we assume that the more than 28,000 who stayed away from the polls do not care whether school keeps or not at the City Hall? Wii.2 -* Maybe the 28,000 non-voters will be good enough to withhold all criticism and gripes on city af- fairs for two years, while the rest of us give the new Commission the kind of scrutiny and support such public servants deserve.
