(progressing very steadily. I hoped that both of these examples would sho\

(During his trip, Compton met Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Rep. Harold F\
ord, D-Tenn., among others.)Tj

(\223I spoke with them individually, which was great because they were ab\
le to see an AmeriCorps member first-hand,\224 Compton)Tj

(said. \223I also had the opportunity to answer some of their questions a\
bout AmeriCorps.\224)Tj

(In July, the Senate passed a bill that would provide $100 million in sup\
plemental funds for AmeriCorps this year, but those)Tj

(monies were subsequently stripped from the bill in the House. Compton ho\
pes Congress and the president will approve $100)Tj

(million in emergency appropriations before fiscal year 2004. If the fund\
s are not available, the MCSC says the number of)Tj

(volunteers who serve throughout Michigan in programs similar to Compton\222\
s will be reduced from 700 to 300.)Tj
